Arum reveals its history through its buildings and memorials, as well as its walking routes. For planning your trip, there are several specific points of interest: the Lambertuskerk with its organ, historic buildings and walking stages through Arum and the surrounding countryside.

Church, monument and local history

Together with its tower, the Lambertuskerk forms a complex built in 1837 to plans by Th. Romein. Its organ was made by F. Leichel & Zn. in 1885. The church and organ therefore represent two distinct, clearly dated chapters in the village’s history.

The war memorial in Arum is a granite memorial stone shaped like an open book. It commemorates eight villagers who died during the Second World War or the colonial war in Indonesia. The remains of Camminghastate are also an archaeological Rijksmonument: the complex was surrounded by a moat. At Schoolsingel 7 stands a Rijksmonument, a school building dating from 1832, with a hipped roof, corner chimneys and Gothic Revival windows.

Historic buildings and former transport routes

De Gekroonde Leeuw reveals another aspect of local history. Built in 1867, this former inn is designed in the eclectic style and served as a stop on the Harlingen–Bolsward tram line, established in 1881. The passageway from gate to gate and the stables remain in their original positions. Here, a building brings together traces of its former use and architectural details.

Walking in Arum and the surrounding area

Stage 11 of the Klooster Claercamppad is 16.9 km long and passes through Arum. In the village, walkers circle the church before continuing to the Pingjumer Gulden Halsband. Between points 70 and 79, the stage leaves the walking route network; for navigation, the route description recommends using its GPX file. Check the route details before setting out. Another route connection is described by the Witmarsum–Arum walking route, which follows the Arumer Feart.

Landscape and village life

Arum was built on a terp, an artificial settlement mound that provided protection from the water. Kaatsen remains deeply rooted in village life today. In the wider region, the Pingjumer Gulden Halsband forms the foundation and heart of the Gouden Land area. This area includes the villages of Arum, Kimswerd, Pingjum, Witmarsum and Zurich.

The Schuttedijk was originally built in the Middle Ages to hold back the Marneslenk. It survived successive land consolidations and is now part of a walking route through the fields and over the coastal ramparts around Pingjum.

For boating plans, section C 062 of the Arumer Feart is relevant: it runs from the Harnzer Feart (A 038) to the municipal boundary with Waadhoeke. A provincial regulation from 2025 specifies a maximum speed of 6 km/h for this section. Check the nautical designations before setting out by boat.
