Uitwellingerga can be explored via its waterways, an adapted cycling route and distinctive local history. These topics offer different perspectives for planning your trip: connections between waterways, conditions on the routes described, and buildings linked to the history of the village.

Waterways and Routes

The Prinses-Margriet Tunnel near Uitwellingerga is an aqueduct that also serves as a traffic tunnel, running beneath the Prinses-Margriet Canal. Its waterway connection leads from the Sneekermeer via the Modderige Geau and the Sânepoel to the Aldhôf. This structure therefore combines water transport and a traffic tunnel.

A circular route runs from Sneek via Uitwellingerga and the Sneekermeer, then back to Sneek via the Houkesloot. It is about 11 kilometres long.

A municipal notice dated 28 August 2026 is also relevant to navigation: at that time, the bridge at Uitwellingerga could not be opened to boat traffic because of its poor condition. Boats with a height of 7.10 metres or more therefore had to take a detour via IJlst and Sneek. Check the situation again before setting off. A further restriction applies to boats more than 3.90 metres wide: they cannot pass through the section via the Watersportboulevard It Ges.

The approach route described reaches Uitwellingerga via the Watersportboulevard It Ges. When planning, it is worth distinguishing this route information from the navigation restrictions mentioned: the width limit applies to boats on the section via It Ges.

Cycling Route and Village Character

In 2024, Recreatieschap Marrekrite adapted the cycling route through Uitwellingerga so that it includes the historic village centre and avoids crossing the Nije Dyk. As this information relates to the 2024 route network, check the current route before setting off. The route thus combines practical guidance for cyclists with a view of the village centre.

A distinctive building in the village’s history is the Poldermolen Uitwellingerga. It was built in 1920 on the Doltesloot and is a working American wind engine of the Herkules brand. Because of its significance in the landscape, it is a landmark in the pastureland near the Sneekermeer. It is also the only surviving medium-sized “energy” wind engine in the Netherlands. Its year of construction, technical classification and significance in the landscape describe different aspects of the same mill.

Culture and History

The Hermes-tsjerke in Uitwellingerga is protected as a national monument. During Tsjerkepaad 2026, the church was open every Saturday from 1:30 to 5:00 p.m., from 4 July to 12 September. The focus was the interactive exhibition “Door het water van de doop” about baptisms and baptismal gowns. These opening hours were part of the 2026 programme; check the relevant dates for later visits.

The former tram stop at Brêgesleatswei 1 also recalls the history of transport: it was built in 1886 during construction of the Sneek–Joure tram line. The year places the stop in the timeline of the construction of this line.

The Oranjevereniging Oppenhuizen and Uitwellingerga organises village festivals every year. They often include sports and games, live music, bingo and a fairground ride, but the individual activities are not the same at every festival. Dates and programmes vary, so checking the details for each event is helpful when planning your trip.
