Workum brings together art, architectural history and maritime themes, alongside connections to the beach and nature. The Jopie Huisman Museum is located in Workum’s historic centre, about 50 metres from the De Merk market square. It is dedicated to the work and life of the Frisian self-taught master Jopie Huisman.

Museums and Architectural History

The Jopie Huisman Museum is open daily year-round from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.; exceptions apply on public holidays. Workum is on the Leeuwarden–Stavoren railway line. The museum is about a 20-minute walk from Workum station. If you plan to visit the museum on a travel day, factor the approximate walking time into your plans and check the public holiday arrangements in advance.

The Sint Gertrudiskerk is an important monument of late Gothic church architecture. The church displays a series of guild biers unique in the Netherlands, dating predominantly from the 18th century. Its architecture and collection history represent two distinct aspects of Workum’s cultural heritage. The Warkums Erfskip Museum is housed in the former weigh house and the town’s old town hall. It tells the story of Workum and its surroundings. While the Jopie Huisman Museum focuses on the work and life of an artist, Warkums Erfskip turns its attention to the town and its surroundings.

Ceramics and Exploring the Town

Pottenbakkerij Kunst is part of Workum’s craft tradition. In Workum, the workshop produces the well-known Frisian slipware as well as painted ceramics. The town’s museum and church visits can therefore be complemented by a look at local ceramic production. Another way to explore Workum is the printed town walk from VVV Waterland van Friesland. It offers a way to discover Workum and seven highlights, giving your visit its own thematic focus.

Maritime History and the Coast

Blazerhaven is a museum harbour with numerous authentic sailing fishing vessels from the first half of the 20th century. During the summer months, there may be opportunities to sail aboard the Zuiderzeebotter EB23 and experience historic fishing life. Check before your trip whether boat trips are currently being offered. Another maritime tradition is Workum’s annual Strontrace: historic sailing vessels carry a sack of manure by sea to Warmond as quickly as possible. If you would like to plan your trip around this event, check the dates in advance.

Workum beach is 800 metres long and is also called “It Soal”. The canal of the same name, It Soal—its name means “waterway”—connects the Eleven Cities town of Workum with the IJsselmeer. The Workumerwaard nature reserve lies on the IJsselmeer coast near Workum. The coast is represented by several different places and themes: the beach, the canal connection and the nature reserve.
