Ruinerwold: Churches, Farm Culture and Walking Routes
Accommodation in Ruinerwold
When looking for a hotel in Ruinerwold, your travel interests can help you decide: church and local history, rural culture or walks each offer a different focus. For walking routes, you can choose from several clearly specified distances; pear blossom in April and the Stoofperenfeest in October offer further seasonal highlights. This lets you tailor your stay to whether you want to focus on memorial sites, the landscape or farming traditions.
Churches, History and Remembrance
The Bartholomeuskerk houses a single-manual organ built by P. van Oeckelen in Harenermolen in 1872. Blijdenstein's parish church is first mentioned in a document from 1152, in which Bishop Hartbert of Utrecht (1139–1150) confirmed donations to the church. These two details offer different perspectives on history: a precisely dated instrument and an early documentary reference.
A memorial on Hardenweg commemorates the seven crew members of the Halifax MKII JD314 bomber. The aircraft crashed on 29 December 1943 after being shot down by a German night fighter. A memorial service is held each year on 4 May in the church opposite. A silent procession then proceeds to the grave of the six fallen men, where flowers and wreaths are laid.
Walking Routes by Distance
“Blik op de Kerk” is a figure-eight walking route with Blijdenstein church at its centre. The longer loop is 8 kilometres, and the shorter one is 4 kilometres. You can start at the church car park or join the route at the Vorenwolde bus stop, served by bus line 32. If you take the bus, check the line’s timetable in advance. The route also includes Dooddijk: funeral processions once travelled along it to the church, and there was also a former gallows site there. The choice of route therefore combines specific distances with traces of local history along the way.
Another option is the Landschapsverhalenroute. The approximately 13-kilometre tour starts and ends at the De Karstenhoeve Museum Farm; the roughly 8-kilometre option starts and ends at Blijdenstein church. When comparing the routes, pay attention to their names: the 8 kilometres of “Blik op de Kerk” and the roughly 8-kilometre Landschapsverhalenroute are different routes. The distance and starting-point information can help you choose between them based on how far you want to walk.
Landscape and Pear Traditions
Ruinerwold’s strip landscape is characterised by drainage ditches that stretch for kilometres. They were dug from long plots of land extending from the sandy ridge along what is now Dr. Larijweg. In a small section of the Natuur Netwerk Nederland, the Wold Aa and Koekanger Aa meet. In April, about 1,400 pear trees blossom along Dr. Larijweg by the old farmhouses.
Another seasonal highlight is the Stoofperenfeest, held on the first Saturday in October. Around 1,200 pear trees bearing cooking pears are auctioned along Dr. Larijweg. Farmsteads along the road host market stalls, food trucks and activities featuring rural and homemade products. The spring blossom and autumn festival offer different highlights for planning your trip.
Farm Culture and Other Activities
De Karstenhoeve Museum Farm is an authentic 17th-century farm that has been used as a museum for 60 years. Guided tours of the farm explain proverbs and sayings that originated there. The visitor experience also includes “koffie mit Roeffie”: pear cake, pear liqueur and a Roeffie baked according to the Ruinerwoldse Roeffie recipe are served. A visit to the museum therefore combines a historic farm with stories about language and a regional speciality.
The Blotevoetenpad at Het groene geschenk offers a letter treasure hunt and a maze for all age groups. You can combine the activity with candle-making workshops at the neighbouring Kaarsenrecycling Het tweede lichtje, including workshops for dipped candles, candles in jars and mosaic candles. Arrange a suitable time in advance. You can play at the Buitengoed Weerwille pitch-and-putt course without a golf certificate. Opoe’s Erfenis on Dijkhuizen is a shop and museum featuring kitchen textiles and traditional Dutch sweets; if you plan to visit, check in advance.
