Koekange: Village History and Monuments
Accommodation in Koekange
Koekange offers several topics to consider when planning a trip: the village’s history, individual historic buildings, a tin museum and local events. If you are looking for hotels in Koekange, these interests may play a role in choosing your travel dates. Groups should arrange an appointment in advance for a museum visit; for events, it is worth checking the current dates and programme.
Village history and linear layout
Koekange originated in the Middle Ages as the surrounding marginal peatlands were reclaimed. This development continued until the 16th century and gradually shifted southwards, resulting in the village’s long, linear layout. The area’s strip-like development from the dike also led to elongated plots. The village and its plots thus reflect two scales of this settlement history: the extent of the village and the shape of the properties. The Dutch Reformed Church at Kerklaan 20 adds to this historical perspective: it is a Rijksmonument and dates largely from 1834.
Buildings with distinctive details
Other buildings each have their own distinctive features. Boerderij Welgelegen in Koekange is a Rijksmonument; its residence was built in 1881 in the eclectic style. A farm at Dorpsstraat 68 was built in 1911 in the Art Nouveau style, based on a design by G. Otten Jzn. of Meppel. The small farmhouse at Eggeweg 23 dates from the 19th century. Its hipped roof is partly covered with tiles and partly with thatch; it also has a Uilebord. The architectural details therefore differ considerably: in one case, the emphasis is on style and design, and in the other, on roof shape and construction.
There is also a cross-shaped natural stone memorial at Dorpsstraat. It commemorates local residents who lost their lives during the war in the former Dutch East Indies and serves more generally as a memorial to the Second World War. The site thus combines the form of a specific monument with a remembrance that reaches beyond the local context.
Museum and dining
At Landgoed Welgelegen, the Blikmuseum displays around 2,000 tin cans, including cans from Dutch brands and an old tin-can steam locomotive. The collection brings together everyday objects and an unusual item made from the same material. Groups can visit the museum year-round by appointment; arrange your visit in advance. The De Hooiberg country restaurant serves lunch, dinner, drinks, as well as coffee and something sweet. If you would like to dine there, check the current opening hours before your visit.
Planning festivals and events
The Highland Games in Koekange feature strength events such as caber tossing, milk-can carrying, stone putting and tug of war. The Koekanger Feest includes an annual church service. Its traditions also include a traditional bicycle quiz tour through the surrounding area, starting at Dorpshuis De Schakel, and a traditional festive procession through the village. The “Van Schakel tot Schakel” walking event takes place regularly and offers several routes through the area around Koekange. These formats therefore differ: the Highland Games focus on strength events, while the bicycle quiz tour and walking event are route-based activities. Dates and specific programmes may vary; check for the next event and the available routes before your trip.
