Villafranca Di Verona brings together different themes for your trip: the Castello Scaligero represents the history of fortifications and medieval life, while the Museo del Risorgimento focuses on Italian independence and unification. Church art and the Parco Urbano del Tione complement these highlights with a single altarpiece and paths, green spaces and playgrounds. If you are looking for a hotel, these differences can help you choose the focus of your stay.

Castello Scaligero: the history of fortifications and medieval life

The Castello Scaligero became part of the Serraglio Scaligero defensive system, which extended for much of its length along the Tione River. This makes it possible to place the castle in the context of a larger defensive system. Following restoration work carried out in 2023, the interior rooms could be visited, and a new route over the ramparts was also established. The rooms were furnished with exhibits on civilian and military life in the castle during the Middle Ages. This brings two perspectives together: the role of the Castello in the Serraglio Scaligero and the portrayal of life in its interior rooms. Museo del Risorgimento and Palazzo Bottagisio

The Museo del Risorgimento is housed in Palazzo Bottagisio. It presents the military and political history of Italian independence. Its collection includes sabres, bayonets, grenades and cannonballs, as well as prints and memorabilia that belonged to the opposing armies in the wars for Italian independence and unification.

The museum is located in the rooms of Palazzo Bottagisio, a stately residence decorated with valuable paintings and elements of its original furnishings. Its original owners, Gandini Morelli Bugna Bottagisio, hosted the two emperors during the historic days of 1859. This gives the exhibition venue its own historical dimension alongside the subject of Italian independence.

Church art: a single altarpiece

The Chiesa della Disciplina was built by the Counts Maffei next to their palace. The church houses Orazio Farinati’s altarpiece “The Visitation of the Virgin Mary to Saint Elizabeth, with Saints Joseph and Zacharias” (“Visitazione della Madonna a S. Elisabetta, con i SS. Giuseppe e Zaccaria”). The title names the event depicted and the saints. While this work focuses on a specific religious scene, the Museo del Risorgimento conveys political and military history through its collection. When planning your trip, you can therefore distinguish between a single work of art and historical collection items.
