Pai on Lake Garda: Local History and Monte Baldo
Accommodation in Pai
Pai combines local history with views of Lake Garda and the slopes of Monte Baldo. The oldest part of the village lies on Monte Baldo; Pai di Sotto is situated on the lakeshore near the Romanesque Church of San Gregorio. Forests, churches, historic details and trails around Pai offer a range of starting points for planning your trip. If you are looking for hotels in Pai, these local and natural features can help you get a sense of Pai as a destination.
Village Locations and Landscape
The oldest part of Pai lies on the slopes of Monte Baldo. In Pai di Sotto, the 12th-century Romanesque Church of San Gregorio is located on the lakeshore. These different settings are also useful when planning: one is the oldest part of the village on the hillside, the other the hamlet by the water. Forests of hornbeam, downy oak, holm oak and ash surround Pai. Near Pai di Sopra, Tanella Cave lies in the forests on the slopes of Monte Baldo. The landscape therefore combines woodland and hillside scenery with views of Lake Garda.
Churches and Traces of Local History
The apse of the Parish Church of San Marco contains fragments of Late Gothic frescoes dating from the late 14th to the early 15th century. The Church of San Marco opens onto a viewing terrace overlooking Lake Garda. In Pai di Sotto, the Church of San Gregorio Magno stands in a scenic location in the cemetery. From Pai di Sotto, the cemetery and the Oratory of San Gregorio can be reached on foot via Via Giosuè Carducci. Pai di Sopra also preserves a trace of its history: the remains of the castle fortifications dismantled by Barbarossa.
Details in Pai di Sopra
The lanes of Pai di Sopra’s historic centre feature painted roadside shrines. One shrine on Via dell’Angelo was commissioned by a miner and painted by Eugenio Vangelista. The historic washhouse is another distinctive feature of the village: locally called “fontana,” it has a work surface made of Verona marble. The Calchera, in turn, is an old lime kiln once used to produce lime. From Piazza San Marco, a woodland trail leads there via Via Monte Baldo in just a few minutes. Individual places and objects like these make local history tangible at specific locations.
Trails to the Ponte Tibetano
The trails in the surrounding area differ in their starting and ending points. Sentiero 31 runs from Cassone to Pai di Sopra and is graded E. Sentiero 39 leads from Località Punta Piàghen di Pai to San Zeno di Montagna and is graded T. A hiking route described by the CAI starts in Pai di Sopra on Sentiero 38, reaches the Ponte Tibetano via Sentieri 39 and 41, and returns to the Pai di Sopra car park after crossing the bridge. An uphill path also leads from the entrance to Pai di Sopra to the bridge in about 20 to 25 minutes on foot. The Ponte Tibetano della Val Vanzana was built in 2019; it is 34.7 metres long and stands 42 metres above the stream below. Trail conditions and markings can change; check them before setting out.
More Trails in the Surrounding Area
North of Pai di Sotto, a cycling and walking path runs from Castelletto di Brenzone to Navene di Malcesine. Its geographical reference points differ from those of the trails to the Ponte Tibetano described above: here, the two endpoints of the cycling and walking path are key, while the hiking trails vary in their starting points, destinations and grades. When planning your trip, you can consider these specific trail details alongside Pai’s historic sites and landscape features.
