Torri Del Benaco: Rock Engravings, Forests and History
Accommodation in Torri Del Benaco
Torri Del Benaco can be explored through several distinct highlights: a steel-cable bridge, mountain forests and traces from different eras. If you are looking for a hotel for your stay, these themes may influence your choice of destination. The following sections introduce different aspects of the municipality, from a tour with clear timings to archaeological and cultural traces.
The Tibetan bridge and its routes
The Ponte tibetano Torri del Benaco is a 34-metre-long high ropes course on steel cables, about 30 metres above the ground. The standard route takes about two hours; the additional route via the Via ferrata del Bunker takes three hours. With the additional route, allow around one extra hour compared with the standard route of about two hours. Check the tour’s operating status before travelling.
The landscape at higher elevations
The entire municipality of Torri Del Benaco has been designated as being of special public landscape interest under Law No. 1497 of 29 June 1939. A specific natural area lies in the higher elevations around Pai and Albisano: there are forests of hop-hornbeams, downy oaks, holm oaks and ash trees. These forests are considered rich in wildlife such as foxes, hares and badgers. If both nature and cultural heritage matter to your trip, the landscape and wildlife offer a distinct focus alongside the historical and archaeological themes.
Archaeological traces
Human presence in Torri Del Benaco dates back to around 2000 BC. Archaeological excavations in 1978 uncovered decorated pottery and flint objects from the Bronze Age. Rock engravings from the Bronze Age and even earlier periods can be seen between Torri del Benaco and Garda. The largest number of rock engravings in the municipality is found in Brancolino; the Great Rock in the Crero area is the largest stone among those on the Veronese shore of Lake Garda. The pottery and flint come from excavations, while the rock engravings are visible in the landscape: this makes the Bronze Age tangible in different ways.
Fortress, museum and local history
Castello Scaligero is a fortress of probably Roman origin. The Museo del Castello Scaligero preserves evidence of life on the lake, including traditional fishing techniques and olive-growing traditions. In this way, traditional techniques and customs complement the archaeological traces and the history of the fortifications, offering another perspective on life by the lake.
The town’s architecture also offers different points of reference in time. Torre di Berengario dates from the 10th century and was part of the Rocca (Trincerò). Chiesa della Santissima Trinità was built in the 14th century and preserves several well-preserved 15th-century frescoes. The tower, church building and frescoes therefore point to three different centuries. This makes it easy to distinguish the date of construction from later decorative features as you explore the town’s history.
