Discover Orsago: culture, history and nature
Accommodation in Orsago
Orsago can be explored from different perspectives: through the parish church of San Benedetto Abate, its villas and archaeological finds, and the landscape around Andar par rivai. If you are looking for a hotel in Orsago, these themes can help you decide what to focus on during your stay. The historical connections range from Neolithic finds to buildings from later centuries; the nature area also offers a variety of habitats.
Church, archaeological finds and villas
The parish church of San Benedetto Abate was dedicated to Saint Benedict the Abbot on the first Sunday in September 1695. This precise date provides a specific point of reference in the history of Orsago's church.
Flint tools used for hunting were found in the Palù area near Orsago, including arrowheads, scrapers for working hides and cutting blades. Primitive ceramic objects were also found. The finds date from the final phases of the Neolithic period and are placed between 4000 and 3000 BC. They therefore predate the Roman funerary aedicula of the Terentii by a considerable margin.
This funerary aedicula was discovered in 1949 while ploughing in the locality of Prà della Stalla. Today, it is on display at the Museo di Treviso. The discovery site and its current place of display are therefore different: the find points to Orsago's history, while the object is now exhibited in Treviso.
Villa Sbrojavacca-Zanin dates from the 17th century and was built by the noble Sbrojavacca family. At the rear are a large park and a loggia with cross vaults. The round arches feature mascarons, or mask-shaped decorative motifs. The villa is inhabited and can only be viewed from the outside.
At the end of the 17th century, the Venetian noble Priuli family had Villa Priuli-Chastonnay-Da Re built. The year 1689 is engraved in the floor beneath the entrance portico. Villa Licini offers a different historical connection, dating back to the 19th century: it was built in 1879 by the family of the same name. It can be spotted while walking along Via Mazzini.
The municipal library is also part of Orsago's cultural landscape. It is a public reading facility with a catalogued collection of books.
Landscape and nature around Orsago
The equipped Andar par rivai area can be reached via the blue trail or the Andar par rivai trail. Its landscape is typical of the Po Valley: farmland is bordered by medium-height hedges.
Three habitat types are identified in the area: mesophilic tree hedges, a spring-fed stream and various cultivated areas. The stream has a predominantly sandy bed and is home to aquatic plants, sticklebacks and frogs. This makes it possible to distinguish the features of the stream from the hedges and farmland that shape the wider landscape.
A wooden tower currently stands in the Risorgive area and serves as an observation tower. It adds a structure specifically designated as an observation tower to the area's nature features.
