Oderzo combines visible Roman remains with museum collections, works of art and a walking path along the Monticano. Each place offers a different focus: archaeological evidence of the ancient city, sacred art and outdoor activities. If you’re looking for hotels in Oderzo, these themes can help you decide what to focus on during your stay.

Archaeology: Forum, Domus and Museum

The Museo Archeologico Eno Bellis opened to the public in 1881 and is now housed in the Barchessa of Palazzo Foscolo. Its collections showcase finds from pre-Roman and Roman times, as well as Late Antique mosaics. Together with the visible archaeological remains of the Area del Foro Romano e Domus via Mazzini, they offer insight into different aspects of the city’s history.

The Area del Foro Romano e Domus via Mazzini features the remains of a forum dating to the Augustan period. These include a paved square whose recorded width is 40 metres and whose length is at least 98.7 metres. The length is explicitly a minimum measurement; together, these dimensions give a concrete sense of the square’s size. The area also includes remains associated with the civic basilica. The foundations of a monumental staircase are probably attributed to the city’s Capitoline temple, dedicated to the Capitoline Triad.

The Domus via Mazzini offers a different perspective on Roman architecture. Its surviving features include mosaic floors and the remains of a room heated by a hypocaust, which is attributed to the house’s bathing area. A hypocaust was an ancient heating system that channelled heat beneath the floor. Thus, the archaeological site brings public buildings and evidence of domestic life together.

Finds from different periods

The pre-Roman section of the Museo Archeologico Eno Bellis displays Venetic inscriptions, votive bronzes and zoomorphic terracotta figurines. It also features iron and bronze horse equipment from a horse burial. The context in which it was found gives this exhibit a different setting from the inscriptions and votive offerings; together, the objects reveal the diversity of artefacts that have survived.

The Roman section displays finds from Roman wells, stone funerary monuments from the Opitergine necropolis, valuable grave goods, bronzes and domestic furnishings. The tour ends with multicoloured Late Antique mosaics. They once decorated the floor of a wealthy urban domus. The museum therefore encompasses evidence from different periods and aspects of life, from grave finds to everyday household objects.

Sacred art and historic buildings

The Duomo di San Giovanni Battista houses works by Palma il Giovane, Pomponio Amalteo and Andrea Bellunello. The Museo del Duomo displays sacred artworks and liturgical objects dating from the 16th to the 20th century. One precisely dated example is a cycle of five oil paintings on canvas, created by Pomponio Amalteo in 1546 and depicting scenes from the life of John the Baptist. The collection’s broad time span and this precisely dated group of works offer different points of interest for art lovers.

Historic landmarks can also be found outside the museums. Casa Ottoboni-Saccomani, located in Piazza Grande, is adorned with 16th-century frescoes. The surviving Porta di Treviso is also known as Toresin and Torresin. These buildings add frescoes and a historic gateway to the archaeological themes.

Walks and outdoor activities

The Monticano runs alongside Oderzo’s historic centre. A walking path along its embankment offers the opportunity to follow several routes. Alongside the forum, domus and museum, riverside paths provide another option: you can focus your time in Oderzo more on its archaeological heritage or on outdoor activities.

Giardini Ca’ Diedo is a public municipal park. It is a place for walking, relaxing, exercising and playing with children. Its facilities include swings, climbing frames, wooden rocking horses and benches. For a visit with children, the play equipment mentioned here is a practical consideration; benches are also available in the park.

The Ufficio IAT Oderzo tourist information office is located at Via Garibaldi 65 in Palazzo Foscolo. Check the address again before your visit. When looking for hotels in Oderzo, the town’s different themes can guide your choice of where to stay: archaeology, sacred art, or paths along the Monticano and through the park.
