Discover Pezzan through its parish church, historical records, and landscape history. If you are looking for a hotel in Pezzan, these topics can help you decide what to focus on: would you like to explore sacred art or the development of the town?
Church and sacred art
The parish church in Pezzan is dedicated to the “Santi Vito e Compagni Martiri” (Saint Vitus and Companion Martyrs). Its main altarpiece dates from 1850 and is attributed to Leandro Guadagnin. The church also contains a wooden Madonna del Rosario (Madonna of the Rosary) dating from 1606; its artist is unknown. The two works therefore differ both in date and in what is known about their creators: an artist is attributed to the altarpiece, while the artist who made the Madonna remains unknown. The Oratorio della Madonna delle Grazie is described as a peripheral church; its address is via Postumia Romana Ovest 1 in Pezzan d’Istrana.
Early history and the place name
A local historical account first mentions Pezzan in 996 in a document by Bishop Rozone of Treviso. According to the account, in the same year the bishop donated the woods, the village, and the then-existing church of San Vito to the monastery of Mogliano and the Benedictines. The early written reference and the donation thus belong to the same year but concern different aspects: the account mentions Pezzan in a document and also describes the transfer of the woods, village, and church.
The name Pezzan is said to derive from “fundus pettianus,” associated with the settler Pettius in the 4th or 5th century. This is presented as a possible explanation. The northern part of Pezzan is also linked to the ancient Via Postumia. Thus, a dated reference, a cautiously worded explanation of the name, and a historically significant site within a specific area all feature in Pezzan’s history.
Landscape history
The 20th-century landscape history includes the construction of a military airfield on a large part of Pezzan’s territory. Many families had to move as a result of the expropriation of their land. The history of the area therefore encompasses not only church and written records, but also far-reaching changes in land use and the relocation of many families. The document of 996 and this chapter of more recent history belong to very different periods: the early account concerns the village, woods, and church, while the later transformation of the area involved expropriations and relocations.
Cycling and bus timetable
A 2025 publication by Pro Loco describes the 53-kilometer “Pedalando Istrana” cycling route. It passes through fields and hedgerows and connects the route with the historical memory of Istrana. The route description thus gives its specific length, the character of the landscape, and its historical connection to Istrana.
The 2025 timetable for non-school services listed the stop “LOC. PEZZAN D'ISTRANA,” with departure times at 06:57, 08:00, 08:55, 10:55, 12:55, 14:45, and 18:25. As these times are from a 2025 edition, check the current timetable before making a specific journey.
