Torreorsina is located on the summit of Santa Maria Hill in the Valnerina of Terni; its elevated position offers impressive views. If you are looking for a hotel in Torreorsina, the village’s themes may shape your choice of destination: medieval local history, art associated with Aurelio De Felice, and a walking path along the river offer different points of interest. Consider whether you are mainly interested in cultural history or would also like to plan some time outdoors.

History between the watchtower and village details

In 1270, the Municipality of Spoleto had a watchtower built to guard this part of its territory. The Church of Santa Maria Assunta dates from a later period: it was built in 1580 and was previously dedicated to Saint Roch. The comparison spans the 13th to the 16th century, placing the history of fortifications alongside that of religious architecture. Outside the village gate stands a decorative fountain from the 19th century. The Manassei Casino has a six-hour clock that still tells the time in the village. The tower, church, and fountain mark different periods of construction, while the clock represents an enduring element of timekeeping.

Art and culture associated with Aurelio De Felice

Aurelio De Felice was born in Torreorsina in 1915. His studio home in Torreorsina was often visited by artists and figures from the cultural scene. The house’s garden contains an open-air museum with fiberglass copies of some of his well-known sculptures. The open-air museum on the upper hill features thirteen sculptures by De Felice. The De Felice Park is located in Torreorsina; its grounds include a fountain designed by him. These art sites and works offer insight into different aspects of De Felice’s connection to the village.

In the 1960s, De Felice founded the Cenacolo di Torreorsina. It connected Terni with 20th-century European culture. This context complements the sculptures and village sites with another perspective on Torreorsina’s cultural history: it extends from De Felice’s biography to a link between Terni and the cultural life of Europe in the last century.

Local history, the valley, and the riverside path

Torreorsina is part of a series of fortified medieval villages in the Nera Valley. These also include Casteldilago, Arrone, Montefranco, Ferentillo, Macenano, and Terria. This makes it possible to understand the village both through its own architectural history and in the context of the other villages in the valley.

A 2013 protected-area dossier describes a walking path along the river connecting Torreorsina with Casteldilago. Check locally on the current condition of the path before setting out. Alongside the historical and cultural themes, this offers a hike as another possible focus for your trip planning.

The former monastery of Santa Maria del Caso survives as a ruin. It was a very old Benedictine abbey on the hill opposite Torreorsina. If you plan to visit the ruin, check the current conditions in advance.
