Arrone combines the landscape of the Bassa Valnerina with architecture, art and a variety of ways to enjoy the outdoors. This offers two perspectives to consider when planning your trip: the town’s architecture and artworks, or trails and activities in the surrounding area. Both can be explored through specific places and themes.

Arrone and the landscape of the Valnerina

Arrone is located in the Bassa Valnerina and is part of the Parco Fluviale del Nera. Its natural surroundings include the Velino and Nera rivers, Lago di Piediluco and the nearby Cascata delle Marmore. The remains of the Castello degli Arroni offer views across the Valnerina and connect the landscape experience with a historic site. In Arrone, the river landscape and architectural heritage are distinct yet equally tangible travel interests.

Architecture and art in Arrone

The town’s bell tower dates back to the 13th century. Its six arches and four bells give the structure a clearly defined architectural profile. Arrone is also associated with the traditional art of bell ringing. In 2024, UNESCO recognised this tradition as intangible cultural heritage of humanity.

The Chiesa di San Giovanni Battista is a Gothic building dating from the 13th and 14th centuries. Its defining features include a square tower and a polygonal apse. Inside are votive frescoes depicting saints; the apse frescoes are also attributed to the conventionally named “Maestro del trittico di Arrone.” Here, architecture and sacred painting can be appreciated together.

The Chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta offers a different artistic highlight: its left apse contains 16th-century glazed terracotta sculptures. Visitors interested in church art can compare these works with the votive frescoes and apse decoration of San Giovanni Battista. Together with the bell tower and the remains of the Castello degli Arroni, they offer a multifaceted view of Arrone’s architectural and artistic history.

Hiking trails and outdoor activities

The trail between Arrone and Tripozzo passes through the Valnerina hills, characterised by olive groves, and alongside historic traces of olive cultivation. The Parco Fluviale del Nera near Arrone also has guided walks and trekking trails. It is worth checking the conditions of each trail before setting out to plan your route.

The Greenway del Nera offers a different kind of trail: from Arrone, you can access the unpaved path along the river. It can be travelled on foot, by bicycle or on horseback. By contrast, the trail to Tripozzo passes through hilly olive-growing countryside and alongside traces of historic olive cultivation. The two descriptions therefore highlight different ways to spend time outdoors, without suggesting that they form a single route.

Natural rock faces near Arrone are also suitable for climbing. Rafting is offered on the Nera River between Ferentillo and Arrone. This means that outdoor experiences here extend beyond hiking and trekking trails to include other activities. If you are looking for a hotel in Arrone, you can plan your stay according to whether architecture and artworks or trails and outdoor activities are your main interest.
