Orvieto Scalo can be explored from a range of starting points: a garden, several walking and cycling routes, and train and bus connections shape the options available locally. Which ones matter to you depends on whether you are planning to get around on foot or by bike, travel up to Orvieto, or continue on to the surrounding area.

Garden in the Neighbourhood

Giardino del Fosso dell’Abbadia is located on Via Monte Terminillo. A municipal report dated 27 March 2025 mentions shaded structures, inclusive play equipment and a dog run there. The report also mentions new signage and lighting. The tunnel on Via Paglia, which connects the garden with the rest of the neighbourhood, has been lit and repainted. As parks can change, it is best to check the current situation before visiting.

The information about the garden distinguishes between specific features: shade, play equipment and the dog run are separate aspects of the site. The tunnel connection is a separate point of reference; it complements the information about signage and lighting, without suggesting that these are the same as the garden’s amenities.

Walking and Cycling Routes with Different Starting Points

For a walk, the “Orvieto Scalo – Tra fiumi e torrenti” route starts at Piazza della Pace. It is mostly flat; a pedestrian bridge leads towards Ciconia. Check the trail conditions before setting out. Another option is Itinerario 5, which runs from Orvieto Scalo via Le Velette and Canale Vecchio to Porano. The routes differ in their described paths and destinations.

There are also several ways to explore by bike. The second stage of the Ciclovia del Sole runs from Fabro Scalo to Orvieto Scalo. It begins by the first houses of Orvieto Scalo, on a separate cycle and pedestrian path. The “Paesaggi variopinti” circular cycling route starts and ends at the car park by the station. “Dai vigneti doc ai boschi selvaggi” is another circular cycling route; its starting point is Piazzale della Pace. For planning, this means you can choose between a stage connecting two places and tours with different starting points. The stated start and end points are not the same for every route.

Getting There and Travelling Up to Orvieto

Piazza Matteotti is the main departure point for buses serving the town centre and other places in the surrounding area. An Orvieto funicular station is also located there, on the same square as the railway station. The funicular connects Piazza Matteotti in Orvieto Scalo with Piazza Cahen in upper Orvieto and takes passengers to the town centre in just a few minutes. From Piazzale Matteotti, you can also travel up to the old town by funicular or city bus.

City and regional bus stops are at Piazzale Matteotti, opposite the railway station and the lower funicular station. Orvieto railway station is on the Rome–Florence–Milan railway line. If you are planning to travel by train or bus, check the latest timetables and connections before setting off: timetables, operators and stops may change. This keeps the distinction between arriving by train, taking a bus and travelling by funicular clear when planning your day.

Processions and Market Events

For the Good Friday Via Crucis, the procession starts at the Church of Sant’Anna and returns there. The traditional celebrations in honour of the patron saint, Sant’Anna, included a religious procession in 2025. The celebrations also featured food stalls selling fried dishes and fish specialities.

On Saturday, 13 June 2026, TRAMErcato took place in the gardens next to the roundabout in Orvieto Scalo. The market brought together agricultural producers and craftspeople from the Orvieto area. Products on offer included cheese, cured meats, seasonal organic vegetables, wine, honey and extra virgin olive oil. At around 11 a.m., the producers held an aperitif featuring tastings of the specialities on offer. These details relate to the market day described and give an insight into what was available then, not a range that is permanently available.

Find a Hotel to Suit Your Plans

The starting points and connections mentioned above provide practical guidance. Compare hotel options with your own plans for each day, and check the latest timetables and the conditions of the routes you intend to use when planning.
