Stroncone: Medieval Lanes and Cultural History
Accommodation in Stroncone
Stroncone brings together a medieval historic center, museums, Franciscan history and routes with different focuses. When planning your trip, you can consider whether you are most interested in historic buildings, manuscripts, cultural festivities or a walking route. The specific visitor requirements for the museums are especially important: advance booking is required for both.
Medieval Center and Architectural History
The historic center has preserved its medieval character. Narrow, winding streets, stone portals and an old well just inside the walls define this part of Stroncone.
The buildings also have a long history: the Palazzo Comunale dates from the 13th century. The Chiesa Collegiata San Nicolò is one of Stroncone’s oldest churches. In 1181, the consuls of Stroncone donated the church to the Abbey of San Benedetto in fundis. The Oratorio di San Giovanni Decollato stands to the left of the entrance gate to the ancient castle. It preserves finely executed works by Giuseppe Bastiani, known as Giuseppino da Macerata.
Museums and Franciscan Heritage
The Museo dei Corali is housed in the old Chiesa della Madonna del Gonfalone. On display are illuminated parchment codices from the 14th century. They come from the collegiate churches of San Michele Arcangelo and San Nicolò di Stroncone. For those interested in medieval manuscripts, this museum visit brings together the material, period of creation and provenance of the codices. The Museo di Storia Naturale offers another museum experience. It can be visited free of charge by prior arrangement with the municipality of Stroncone. The Museo dei Corali is also free to visit by prior arrangement. Bear this requirement in mind when planning your trip.
The Convent of St. Francis is a distinct focus of the town’s history. According to tradition, it was founded by Francis of Assisi in 1213. In the 17th century, it was an important center for theological, historical and scientific studies. The convent library is one of the richest Franciscan collections in Umbria and can still be visited in its original arrangement. The traditional account of its foundation, its former role as a place of study and its library illustrate the different historical roles of the convent.
Walking Routes with Different Focuses
The old Sentiero francescano di Stroncone connects Stroncone with the hamlet of I Prati. The Percorso delle Mura Castellane is a walking route with viewpoints and two intermediate entrances to the historic center. It also features a viewing promenade and lighting along the entire town wall.
Agosto Stronconese
Agosto Stronconese is a historic festival established in 1979. It commemorates the transfer of the body of Blessed Antonio, the town’s patron saint, from Assisi to Stroncone. The festival includes the historical reenactments Rescritto Imperiale and Corteo Storico. If you plan to time your trip around Agosto Stronconese, check the dates for that year’s edition.
