Ponte Nuovo lies near the confluence of the Chiascio and Tiber rivers. A small settlement gradually grew up around its medieval bridge and still exists today. The bridge is therefore a historic landmark of the town; at the same time, the routes between Ponte Nuovo and Deruta offer another perspective on the area. If you are looking for a hotel in Ponte Nuovo, you can decide whether to focus your trip planning primarily on the town’s history or on one of the routes mentioned.

The Bridge and the Town’s History

The Ponte Nuovo bridge dates back to 1276, when the city of Perugia commissioned its construction from Fra Bevignate da Cingoli. The structure crossing the Tiber is also known as the Monte Nero Bridge. The bridge’s historical names include “Pons Novus” and “ponte Dirrute.” The medieval bridge was destroyed by bombing in June 1944; the present-day bridge was rebuilt in 1948–1949. The dates mark different phases: 1276 refers to the commission for the medieval bridge, 1944 to its destruction, and 1948–1949 to the rebuilding of the present-day bridge.

Before Fra Bevignate’s reconstruction, the river crossing at Ponte Nuovo was made by boat for about five centuries. This detail adds the earlier means of crossing to the bridge’s history. Together with the settlement that gradually grew around the medieval bridge, it offers a picture of how the bridge and the town’s development are connected.

Routes between Ponte Nuovo and Deruta

The Greenway between Ponte Nuovo and Deruta runs alongside cultivated fields and partly follows the Ciclovia del Tevere. The latter runs from Deruta to Marsciano. The two names therefore do not simply refer to the same route: the Greenway is described for the Ponte Nuovo–Deruta section, while the Ciclovia runs from Deruta to Marsciano. This distinction is useful for planning if you want to consider the local route section separately from the Ciclovia. The fields along the Greenway and its partial overlap with the Ciclovia are different reference points for planning a cycling trip.

The Via Amerina variant from Perugia to Deruta offers another route option. After crossing the Tiber, it passes through Ponte Nuovo, does not go through Assisi, and is 20 km long. This distance applies to this variant between Perugia and Deruta. If you are planning this walking route, check the signage and trail conditions locally before setting out.

The routes therefore differ according to the information available for planning: the Greenway is described in terms of fields and its partial overlap with the Ciclovia, while the Via Amerina variant is described by its route and its length of 20 km. If a walking route with a stated distance is important to you, the Via Amerina variant provides that information. For cycling plans, the details about the Greenway and the Ciclovia are relevant.
