In Matigge, historic connections lead from the Torre Matigge to churches, alongside olive oil tastings and routes through olive groves. When planning your trip, you can choose based on history, art, olive oil or a hike with a stated walking time.

Olive oil and visitor facilities

The Società Agricola Trevi “Il Frantoio” in the hamlet of Matigge offers free tastings of Olio Elite, Olio Famiglia and Olio Trevi D.O.P. Umbria Colli Assisi-Spoleto. Il Frantoio also has a permanent exhibition of agricultural equipment from the late 19th century. If you are planning a visit specifically to see the exhibition, check in advance on visiting arrangements. Visitor facilities include a large car park, including space for buses, facilities for visitors with disabilities, and a garden with a covered veranda. Check the current condition of the facilities before your visit.

Torre Matigge and churches

The Torre Matigge was built by the municipality of Trevi at the end of the 14th century. It served as a military defensive structure against armed bands travelling along the Via Flaminia. The Chiesa di San Donato lies above a mountainous branch of the ancient Via Flaminia. It is on the right-hand hydrological bank of a watercourse identified on maps as the Fosso di Paterno; this watercourse once marked the boundary of the historic Balìa of Matigge. The Chiesa di San Nicolò has a semicircular apse with frescoes attributed to Mezastris. A country lane near Matigge runs through olive groves to this church.

The attractions offer distinct choices for deciding what to focus on during your visit: the Torre represents architectural and military history, San Donato its location by an ancient road and historic watercourse, and San Nicolò its frescoes and the country lane through olive groves. This lets you give different weight to culture and landscape.

Routes and directions

The first route of Itinerario 01 “Trevi 4 passi” starts in front of the Torre Matigge. A useful reference point for the start is near the car park opposite the cemetery or church of Matigge. The first route is considered suitable for the whole family and walkable year-round; in summer, avoid the hottest hours. The routes of “Trevi 4 passi” are not currently maintained; some sections may be incomplete or difficult to walk. Check the route and its condition before setting out.

The route from the Torre Matigge to Bovara is 12.5 km long, involves about 540 metres of ascent and takes approximately five hours on foot. For planning your day, you can consider walking time, distance and elevation gain separately. About 250 metres uphill from the Torre di Matigge, there is a designated lay-by on the road for parking.
