When planning your trip to Mocaiana, culture, festival dates, and walking and cycling routes take centre stage. The Church of Madonna della Neve and its festival provide a clear calendar reference. At the Madonna del Deserto Monastery, historic architecture, daily Eucharist, and a craft exhibition accessible on request come together. The routes differ in their named waypoints and stated distance.

Culture and Festivals

The small Church of Madonna della Neve stands on the road between Gubbio and Umbertide. The Festa della Madonna della Neve takes place on the Sunday closest to 5 August. So 5 August is the point of reference, not necessarily the festival day itself. If you want to plan your trip around a festival, check the exact event date.

The construction history of the Madonna del Deserto Monastery dates back to 1990: that was when construction of the monastery began around a very old, abandoned and dilapidated church. Eucharist is held at the monastery every day. The craft exhibition can be visited on request. If the exhibition is important to your plans, make your request before your visit.

The Festa della Mocaiana also has its own distinctive feature: it includes the Sagra della Trippa. This distinguishes it from the Festa della Madonna della Neve, whose date is tied to the Sunday close to 5 August. When planning your trip, you can therefore take into account both the calendar reference and the programme of each festival.

Walking and Cycling Routes

Walking trail 270 starts in Mocaiana and ends at Strada della Contessa in the municipality of Gubbio. For your planning, Mocaiana is the starting point and Strada della Contessa the destination. Check the condition of the walking trail before setting out.

On the cycling section of the Via di Francesco, cyclists turn left at Mocaiana to rejoin the walking route. From Mocaiana, the route continues to the entrance to the city of Gubbio; the cycling section ends at the Church of San Francesco in Piazza Quaranta Martiri. The route can therefore be followed using the turn-off, the connection to the walking route, and the stage destination as reference points. As route markings may change, check the current route before setting out.

Another cycling route is the 30-kilometre “Piana.” It reaches Mocaiana from Ponte D’Assi via the Strada Provinciale. The distance gives you a concrete indication of the length of this route. By contrast, the Via di Francesco is described in terms of its turn-off, return to the walking route, and destination points. These are different points of comparison: the Piana’s length is specified, while waypoints help you follow the Via di Francesco. Check road conditions and the current route when choosing your route.
