Limigiano: Castle, Monastery and Landscape
Accommodation in Limigiano
Limigiano is a very old village, documented since 1058. The castle’s origins date back to the 10th century. Together with the monastery founded in 1058, the Church of San Michele Arcangelo and traces of a Roman bathhouse, it offers a multifaceted view of the village’s history. At the same time, the surroundings of Fonte della Tina and expansive panoramic views towards Collemancio shape its landscape. If you would like to combine historic buildings with a tangible connection to the landscape on your trip, Limigiano offers both.
Castle, Monastery and Roman Traces
The old monastery lies within Limigiano Castle and has preserved its original architectural structure. Founded in 1058, the monastery was dedicated to Sant’Angelo. The castle’s origins date back to the 10th century, making its history older than the monastery’s foundation. The castle and monastery thus represent two distinct periods in the village’s history.
A mosaic adds a Roman trace to this historical picture: it was discovered during agricultural work and formed part of a Roman bathhouse. Unlike the castle and monastery, it points to a Roman building type. It therefore extends the historical perspective beyond the medieval origins.
Church of San Michele Arcangelo
The Church of San Michele Arcangelo has three naves; the left side aisle is divided into chapels. The church contains a fresco depicting the martyrdom of Saint Sebastian. At the church door is a Roman capital with a holy water stoup, and the main altar rests on a Roman column drum. These details offer different points of interest: the floor plan describes the space, the chapels its divisions, and the fresco and Roman architectural elements provide distinctive accents. Those interested in church architecture will find both a well-structured interior and specific artistic and architectural details here.
Landscape and Getting Your Bearings
Below the castle lies the Fonte della Tina area, where the Rapace stream flows. A waterfall can be seen in one section of the gorge at Fonte della Tina. Limigiano also offers expansive panoramic views towards Collemancio. These views complement the specific landscape of the gorge with a broad outlook over the surrounding area.
On the road to Cannara, turn left shortly after the Franciscan site of Pian d’Arca to reach Limigiano. The village is also featured as a reference point on a route and a walking trail: the “Gli antichi castelli” route lists Limigiano as one of its points of interest. A CAI hiking trail reaches the village after about three kilometres. The two route references differ: in one, Limigiano is a point of interest on a named route; in the other, it is the destination of an approximate-length hike.
