Fossato di Vico combines a varied landscape within its municipal area with historical landmarks ranging from Roman Helvillum to medieval buildings. When choosing your destination, you can first decide whether you are especially interested in the landscape, a circular hike or the town’s cultural heritage.

Landscape and circular hike

Fossato di Vico is located within Parco del Monte Cucco. The S.S. Flaminia divides the municipal area almost in half. To the west are plains and hills; along one stretch, they are bordered by the River Chiascio, a tributary of the Tiber. The Apennine range extends to the east. Its highest peaks include Cima Mutali and Cima Filetta, both of which are 1,120 metres high. The western plains and hills thus face the eastern peaks, providing a clear point of reference for anyone interested in the varied landscapes of the municipal area.

As a specific hiking option, the Anello della Cima Mutali is a circular route that returns to Fossato di Vico railway station. The route starts and ends there, on the Roma–Ancona line. Check trail conditions before setting out.

Roman traces and medieval buildings

The Ponte di San Giovanni points to the town’s Roman history. In what was then Fossato di Vico, known as Helvillum, the Via Flaminia crossed the Rigo stream at this bridge. This historic structure brings together the town’s former name, a Roman road and a watercourse.

The Antiquarium houses archaeological finds from Roman Helvillum, as well as parchment fragments from Dante’s Divine Comedy. Material from the Roman period thus stands alongside fragments of a literary work in the collection relating to the town’s history.

The Torre e Palazzo Comunale was one of the 14 towers that surrounded the old castle. The original castle of Fossato di Vico is now a ruin known as Roccaccio. The Chiesa di San Cristoforo dates from the 13th century and preserves large sections of frescoes from the Umbrian-Marche school, dating to the 14th and 15th centuries.

Frescoes, collections and architecture

La Piaggiola preserves a cycle of frescoes attributed to Ottaviano Nelli of Gubbio, his school and the Maestro di Fossato. The cycle is dated to 1405–1406. The Chiesa di San Pietro is the oldest church in Fossato di Vico and was originally built as a Camaldolese monastery. These details range from the dating of individual artworks to the historical functions and age of churches.

The Centro museale della Civiltà Contadina comprises around 1,600 objects arranged over three floors. Le Rughe offers another perspective on medieval castle architecture: as a rare example, it combines the layout of the routes within the complex—that is, access—with defence along the inner western ring wall.

Festa degli Statuti and seasonal wine tradition

The Festa degli Statuti takes place every year on the second weekend of May as a medieval festival and is based on life in 1386. If you want to plan your trip around this event, check the dates in advance. The Cantine di San Martino has a different timing: it is a seasonal local tradition centred on new and aged wine. For planning purposes, this means a distinction between the Festa’s specified weekend in May and the seasonal nature of the Cantine.
