Explore Torchiagina through its history along the Chiascio, archaeological traces and church art; culinary themes are also part of the picture. If you’re looking for hotels for your trip, these points of interest can be a starting point for planning: consider whether you’re especially interested in local history, art or cuisine.

History along the Chiascio

From the 14th to the 16th century, the Tower of Torchiagina played a strategic role as a border outpost for Assisi in the direction of Perugia. Another historical landmark is the ancient Torre Chiascina. It stands on the right bank of the Chiascio in a leafy park in the Torchiagina area. Together, these two details connect a history of borderland location with a specific place by the river.

Historically, the Chiascio served as a waterway for communication and trade. Wood, food and animals were transported along it. The river is thus also a reminder of earlier routes and trade in goods, offering a different perspective on the area from the tower’s strategic role.

Archaeological traces add to these themes. Fragments of columns, mosaics, capitals and funerary urns point to an Umbrian-Roman settlement in the Torchiagina area dating to the 3rd century BC. Traces of a pagan temple have also been found in the area. The finds offer insights into different aspects of earlier settlement.

Church art and religious imagery

The church of Madonna del Rosario – S. Carlo e S. Gregorio contains an apse painting by Francesca Capitini. It depicts God the Father, the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove, and Christ crucified. The Virgin Mary is shown presenting the rosary. The painting thus brings together several central figures of Christian imagery in a specific gesture: the presentation of the rosary.

A miniature of Assisi in Torrenova di Assisi

Giancarlo Bocconi built it entirely by hand over 18 years. For the miniature, named “La Città del Sole,” he used pink stone from Monte Subasio and other materials. The model, its scale and its historical depiction combine to offer a view of Assisi in a particular period. Check the reservation information before visiting.
