Comeana offers several different points of interest for planning a trip: the archaeological Montefortini Tumulus, Chiesa San Michele, the Good Friday procession, as well as nature and swimming. You can focus on the history of the tombs and their finds, include the long history of a local church, or plan your stay around a religious event. These topics differ both in their content and in their timing.

Montefortini: Tombs and Finds

The artificial Montefortini Tumulus is now about twelve metres high and contains two tombs. Its grave goods include a turquoise glass bowl and carved ivory objects. These finds attest to the local aristocracy’s political and economic connections over long distances. Montefortini is considered one of Tuscany’s most important archaeological monuments and represents the exceptional cultural development in the Carmignano area during the Orientalizing period.

The site and its finds give the archaeological topic different dimensions: the height and the two tombs describe the tumulus itself, while the glass bowl and ivory objects point to far-reaching connections. If you are interested in the history of the area, Montefortini combines a specific tomb complex with a broader historical perspective.

The Festa Etrusca di Comeana offers a separate date-specific point of interest. Its sixth edition was scheduled for 21 and 22 September 2024 in the olive grove below the princely tumulus of Montefortini. The programme included guided tours of the tumulus, historical re-enactments, themed children’s workshops and food stalls run by local associations. This information refers to the 2024 edition and is not a current event date.

Church History and Good Friday

Chiesa San Michele in Comeana has existed since the 13th century. It was later remodelled in the 16th and 19th centuries. Its history therefore includes a medieval origin and changes in two later centuries. This offers a different historical perspective from Montefortini: here, the focus is on the long development of a church and its later remodelling.

The Processione di Gesù morto Redentore di Comeana is a separate occasion. It is a historical-religious re-enactment that goes beyond a conventional Stations of the Cross. On Good Friday evening, the procession covers a six-kilometre route through Comeana. If this event is a key factor in your travel plans, check the dates for your travel year in advance. The length of the procession route and its connection to Good Friday are specific points to bear in mind, whereas the Festa information refers explicitly to an earlier edition.

Nature and Swimming Courses

Near Parco della Fontina, an information board describes the local flora and fauna. It also mentions crayfish in the Rio Elzana. The nature theme is therefore tied to two specific subjects: the local plant and animal life, and the crayfish mentioned in the river. For travellers who would like to consider nature information alongside archaeological and historical topics, this board offers a separate point of interest.

Piscina Comunale di Comeana offers swimming courses for adults. If you would like to include this in your plans, check the current course offering before your trip, as course availability may change. This makes the swimming courses a specific but time-dependent part of your travel decision.

When choosing your travel dates, it is helpful to distinguish between the topics: the procession takes place on Good Friday evening, while the dates mentioned for the Festa Etrusca relate to its sixth edition, which was scheduled for 2024. The tumulus, church history and information board offer other points of focus.
