Discover Prato: Textile History, Art and Nature
Accommodation in Prato
Get to know Prato through its textile history, art collections and a variety of trails. The Museo del Tessuto combines an extensive collection with a building rooted in industrial history. Other museums focus on contemporary art, science and remembrance, while trails identify Prato as a starting point or a place along the way. When looking for a hotel, you can first consider whether museums and cultural history or planning a route will be the main focus of your stay.
Textile history, industry and art
The Museo del Tessuto is located in Prato, at the heart of one of Europe’s most important textile districts. It preserves more than 9,000 objects, including textiles dating from the early Christian period to the 20th century. The museum is housed in the restored former Ex Cimatoria Campolmi, a monumental example of industrial archaeology. Together, the collection and the building make both textile artefacts and the history of the site part of the visit.
The art collections also explore a range of different themes. The Centro per l’arte contemporanea Luigi Pecci was Italy’s first purpose-built museum institution for 20th- and 21st-century art. The Museo di Palazzo Pretorio displays works by Filippo Lippi, Donatello, Filippino Lippi, Soffici, Yves Klein, Pistoletto and Lipchitz. In its oldest brick section, the medieval building preserves the original structure of a 13th-century tower house. At the Museo Ardengo Soffici, more than fifty works of art from public and private collections provide an overview of Soffici’s work from 1904 through the 1960s.
The Museo dell’Opera del Duomo connects its galleries in a route around a Romanesque cloister. The Sala dei Corali e dei Parati collection includes four choir books adorned with fine miniatures and a valuable series of liturgical vestments. The vestments were donated to the Pieve di Santo Stefano around 1590. Alongside the painting collections, this offers another perspective on religious art and the objects passed down through the generations.
Science and remembrance
The Museo Italiano di Scienze Planetarie has 17 interactive multimedia stations. At the Museo e Centro di documentazione della Deportazione e Resistenza, the focus is on other ways of engaging with history: the museum organises guided tours, film and documentary screenings, workshops on researching historical sources, and educational walks. The museums mentioned therefore range from textiles and visual art to science and historical remembrance.
Nature reserve and trails
The Riserva Naturale Acquerino Cantagallo is a protected nature reserve in the Apennines, covering 1,867 hectares. Its landscape includes beech and chestnut woods, coniferous forests, meadows and monumental trees. Red deer, fallow deer, roe deer, wild boar, wolves and wildcats live in the area. Those interested in landscapes and nature will find a different focus here from that of the urban collections.
The Via della Lana e della Seta is a trail of about 130 kilometres linking Prato and Bologna. It starts in Piazza Duomo in Prato and runs over six stages; the first three pass through Prato, Vaiano and Vernio. Along the way, the route follows the Bisenzio River Park towards Calvana. There, you may see Calvana cattle and free-roaming horses. As trail conditions can change, check the current route before setting out on a stage.
The Tuscan section of the Ciclovia del Sole is about 155 kilometres long and passes through the Riserva Naturale Acquerino-Cantagallo, Montemurlo and Prato. An update dated 17 June 2024 stated that one section was under construction at the time; check current route conditions before your cycling trip. The two trails also differ in their stated lengths: around 130 kilometres for the Via della Lana e della Seta and about 155 kilometres for the Tuscan section of the Ciclovia del Sole.
An October tradition
The Antica fiera di Carmignano takes place every year in the first days of October in Carmignano. The focus is on dried figs from Carmignano, presented in traditional wicker baskets. As dates and programmes may vary, check the latest event details if you would like to include the fair in your travel plans.
