Antisciana is considered a district of ancient origins, set in a scenic landscape. Paths through the green forests around the village and traces of its history offer tangible points of interest. There are also routes and cultural events from past occasions. If you are looking for a hotel in Antisciana, these different highlights can help you tailor your trip to your interests.

Local History and Cultural Connections

The parish church “Chiesa dei Santi Pietro, Prospero e Caterina” is part of the area’s religious history. It is dedicated to Saints Pietro, Prospero, and Caterina.

Antisciana is home to a commemorative plaque for the fallen, dated 1919. Its inscription names Bacci Eugenio, Bertelli Andrea, and Bacci Raffaello as heroes of the war from May 1915 to November 1918. The plaque was placed by the people of Antisciana. The church and plaque offer different points of focus: the dedication names three saints, while the plaque commemorates individuals and a specific period of war.

Forest Paths and Hiking Routes

Paths through green forests wind around Antisciana and the neighboring historic districts. This offers a different perspective from the individual hikes with their named starting and intermediate points: those hikes focus on specific routes, while the forest paths form part of the broader landscape surrounding the area.

On May 19, 2019, a hike set off from the sports facility in Pontecosi, following a mule track to the small Chiesina del Lago and the lake dam. From there, the route continued uphill for about 3 km to Antisciana. For this event, crossing the dam was reserved for registered participants. The approximate distance refers to the subsequent ascent to Antisciana.

A hike during the 2022 Festival delle Frazioni led from Castelnuovo di Garfagnana along the Sentiero Ariosto to the foot of the Fortezza di Mont’Alfonso, then continued via Buggina in the direction of Antisciana. Unlike the route described for 2019, which ended in Antisciana, this hike names the village as a direction. The starting points and routes are therefore quite different.

Events and Local Cuisine

For the Antisciana leg of the Festival delle Frazioni on May 29, 2022, the local Circolo Anspi prepared a traditional lunch. This was a specific food-related event on that particular day.

The “A SPASSO CON IL FURIOSO” program included a hike in Antisciana on April 2 as one of seven walks through the districts of the municipality of Castelnuovo di Garfagnana. Along the routes, street theater performances inspired by the Ariostan Imaginarium were staged. Thus, alongside the routes, cultural performances were also a focus of this program.

A description from 2021 also recounts a two-day Scarpinata della Garfagnana. With stops along the way, it passed through numerous districts of the municipality of Castelnuovo di Garfagnana, including Antisciana, and was intended to introduce participants to the villages’ traditions and culinary specialties.

When planning your trip, you can prioritize these themes according to your interests: forest paths and hiking routes highlight the landscape and outdoor activity, while the church and commemorative plaque offer cultural and historical connections. The event examples add past hikes, street theater, and a lunch to these perspectives. This makes it easy to distinguish general features of the landscape from events associated with specific dates.
