Molazzana offers several clearly defined themes to consider when planning your trip: trails in the Apuan Alps, a municipal area stretching from the Serchio to distinctive peaks, and traces of regional culture and history. When choosing your destination, you can weigh whether to focus mainly on mountain trails and landscapes or also on culinary and historical connections. The trails described differ specifically in their routes, terrain, and views.

Landscape between the Serchio and the Apuan Alps

The municipal area of Molazzana stretches from the right bank of the Serchio River to the peaks of Pania della Croce, Pania Secca, and Pizzo delle Saette. Pania della Croce reaches 1,859 metres. The landscape described includes vineyards and olive groves, chestnut and beech forests, and the limestone ramparts of the Apuan Alps. In June, these are adorned with impressive blooms. The landscape therefore ranges from cultivated land and forests to the mountains’ striking limestone formations.

CAI trails from Piglionico

CAI Trail No. 7 starts at Piglionico, in the heart of the municipality of Molazzana, and leads to Rifugio Enrico Rossi and Pania della Croce, one of the most distinctive peaks in the Apuan Alps. The well-marked and signposted trail passes through cool forests, over steep slopes, and along old stone steps. This description specifies features of the route as well as its two named destinations.

CAI Trail No. 127 also starts at Piglionico. It initially follows Trail No. 7, then branches off towards Mosceta. It runs along a mountain slope through shady forests and extensive scree fields; along the way, there are views of Pania della Croce, Monte Sumbra, and the surrounding peaks. When choosing a route, the difference is therefore not just where it branches off: Trail No. 7 is described as having steep slopes and old stone steps, while Trail No. 127 is noted for its scree fields and views of several peaks.

More trails to Rifugio Enrico Rossi

Several CAI trails to Rifugio Enrico Rossi also branch off from Alpe di Sant’Antonio. Piglionico is the starting point for Trails No. 7 and 127; several trails from the Alpe also lead to the refuge. Thus, the descriptions link the refuge with two different starting points, while the specific routes from Piglionico can be distinguished by their own terrain and landscape features.

History and regional traditions

Another theme is the wartime history of the Garfagnana. The Museo Linea Gotica Garfagnana was established by the Comitato Linea Gotica Garfagnana in the former Don Bosco elementary school in Molazzana. The museum collects military materials and supplies belonging to the armies involved, as well as documents, photographs, maps, and accounts of the conflict in the Garfagnana. The collection thus brings together physical objects and various forms of documentation.

Criscioletta from Cascio is also part of the region’s profile: it is listed in Italy’s national register of traditional agri-food products. Alongside the trails and landscape, a named product from Cascio and the history of the Garfagnana therefore provide distinct themes to explore in Molazzana.
