Sassi sits on a hill on a rocky slope, below which the Torrita Secca stream flows. Its elevated position shapes the character of the village, while its scenic location offers views of the Serchio Valley and the Garfagnana. Village history, church architecture and trails through the landscape offer different focuses for a trip. If you are interested in local history, the Rocca and San Frediano take centre stage; if you want to explore the outdoors, Sassi offers numerous trails through forests, past springs and to viewpoints.

The Rocca and the Church of San Frediano

The Rocca of Sassi preserves the ruins of a signal tower, rebuilt by the Lucchese in the 14th century. The tower ruins anchor the village in its history. The parish church reflects a later change: in 1827, its dedication changed from Madonna di Loreto to San Frediano. The Church of San Frediano stands in the highest part of Sassi. Its design also offers specific points of interest: the unusual apse is formed by a high, windowless wall; the carved and painted wooden ceiling dates from the late 18th century. The apse and ceiling can be considered as distinct architectural features: one defines the exterior form, while the other stands out for its carving and paintwork. The dating of the ceiling complements the church history of 1827 with a later architectural detail; the apse adds its own distinctive feature to the exterior form.

Trails and viewpoints

Numerous trails lead from Sassi through shady forests, past springs and to viewpoints. One trail connects Sassi with the nearby hamlet of Eglio. If you are looking for a route with a named destination, this connection offers a different point of reference from the landscape features of forests, springs and views. The Santuario della Madonna della Neve lies just outside Sassi and is known as a viewpoint. Two different questions can help you choose: are you looking for a connection to a place such as Eglio, or are you more interested in the landscape, with its forests and springs? At the Santuario, the view takes centre stage.

Festivals and local cuisine

The 8Sassi mountain festival took place in the village of Sassi. The 2025 edition included hiking, mountaineering, climbing, ski mountaineering, caving, canyoning, mountain biking and playful educational activities for children. The programme thus brought together various mountain and outdoor activities with a dedicated offer for children.
