Vagli Sotto offers several ways to explore the area: Lago di Vagli and its structures, the history of flooded villages, cultural sites and the landscape of Campocatino. If you are looking for hotels in Vagli Sotto, these highlights can help you plan your trip. The lake is man-made; the bridge and zipline cross the water in different ways, while the church, marble tradition and Campocatino reveal other sides of the area.

Lago di Vagli: Origins and Structures

Lago di Vagli was created in 1947 when the dam on the Edron River was raised. Ponte Sospeso connects the two shores of the lake. The 132-metre suspension bridge is designed for bicycle and pedestrian traffic and is one of the largest in Europe. Its central section has a glass floor above the water. The Volo dell’Angelo zipline stretches 1,500 metres over Lago di Vagli, at a height of about 350 metres and at speeds of up to 150 km/h.

If you plan to try the Volo dell’Angelo, the meeting point is at the VagliPark ticket office in Vagli Sotto, at the intersection of Strada Provinciale 50 and Via Europa. Guests with bookings are taken by bus from VagliPark to the launch area. Check the operator’s latest booking and transport information before your trip.

History and Culture

In 1953, the village of Fabbriche di Careggine was flooded by Lago di Vagli; Pantane and Piari were also flooded in the same event. The submerged village is not continuously accessible. On the shore of Lago di Vagli, Parco dell’Onore e del Disonore is home to more than twenty monumental marble statues dedicated to figures from contemporary history.

The Museo della tecnica estrattiva delle cave di marmo in Arnetola documents the social and technological development of marble quarrying. The Church of Sant’Agostino in Vagli Sotto dates back to the 11th century and has been preserved virtually unchanged to this day. The village and lake bring together different historical themes: the memory of flooded villages, marble quarrying and a building with a long history.

Landscape and Regional Setting

Campocatino is a basin of glacial origin, about 1,000 metres above sea level, with a large meadow at the foot of Monte Roccandagia. Since 1991, it has been a LIPU nature reserve because of its many bird species. The landscape here combines the open meadow with the mountain whose name is part of the place.

In the wider area around Vagli Sotto, the Via Vandelli runs from Vagli di Sopra to Passo della Tambura and then descends to Resceto. This section of the route broadens the perspective beyond the sights of Vagli Sotto, but should not be confused with a route through the village centre.

Regional Cuisine

In the Garfagnana, IGP spelt is an important ingredient in spelt soup. It is prepared with potatoes, beans and, occasionally, a few chard leaves. Biroldo is a traditional Garfagnana sausage made mainly from pig’s head and spices. Both dishes are part of the region’s culinary heritage and complement the trip’s landscape and cultural themes.

For planning, it is also helpful to distinguish the different geographical settings: Campocatino is within the municipality, while the Via Vandelli lies in the wider region; spelt soup and Biroldo represent Garfagnana traditions. When comparing hotels for Vagli Sotto, you can use this distinction to separate local landscape and cultural highlights from broader regional attractions.
