For your stay in Pieve Di Panzano, the Pieve di San Leolino in Panzano offers a specific focus on art and architecture. The landscape also features hills covered with olive trees and vines, as well as long roads lined with cypress trees. Culture and landscape are therefore different sides of the trip; the Pieve can also be included as a detour on a gravel route.

Artworks from Several Centuries

The Pieve di San Leolino is home to artworks from several centuries. A 13th-century dossal attributed to Meliore depicts the Madonna and Child, as well as Saints Peter and Paul. The 14th-century triptych also depicts the Madonna and Child, but adds the mystical marriage of Saint Catherine to the subject. It is attributed to the Maestro di Panzano. A polyptych by Mariotto di Nardo, dated 1421, depicts the Madonna and Child with saints.

Considered together, the three panel paintings share the recurring Marian theme; the triptych adds a distinct thematic emphasis with its depiction of Saint Catherine. Other furnishings also give the church interior its distinctive character: two 16th-century glazed terracotta tabernacles are attributed to Giovanni della Robbia. The baptistery contains a restored fresco by Raffaellino del Garbo depicting the Baptism of Christ. The organ is signed by Demetrio Bruschi and dated 1889.

Architectural History and Church Interior

The earliest surviving documentation of the Pieve di San Leolino dates to 982; architectural and stylistic features place it in the 12th century. These details refer to different historical points: 982 is the year of the earliest surviving documentation, while the architectural dating is inferred from features of the building.

One of the architectural features is a small cloister. Its porch is supported by brick piers and has a wooden roof. The community of San Leolino invites visitors to linger in the welcoming tranquillity of the Romanesque naves. The cloister and naves thus complement the individual artworks with the architecture and spiritual character of the place.
