Cintoia – Castle, Parish Church and Historic Trails
Accommodation in Cintoia
Two themes stand out for a trip to Cintoia: architectural and art history, and hiking trails with traces of the past. Castello di Cintoia and the Pieve di San Pietro a Cintoia offer distinct architectural features, while the Anello di Cintoia follows old paths. Nearby, the Sentiero della Memoria della Valle di Cintoia offers another hiking option.
Cultural Heritage in Cintoia
The earliest record of Castello di Cintoia dates back to 1040. The topography of a fortified settlement is still clearly visible, although only a few traces of the enclosing wall remain. The upper part of the castle is barely visible today. The building is used as a private residence and is not open to visitors.
The Pieve di San Pietro a Cintoia has been documented since the 8th century. This Romanesque building has a single large nave ending in a semicircular apse. This description gives a clear idea of the floor plan: a large interior space is closed off by the apse. The Pieve’s long-documented history and simple, single-nave layout offer a different perspective on architectural history from the fortified settlement of the castle.
Art history is also part of the area’s cultural heritage. The work Madonna with Child and Saints Bartholomew and Francis, dated to around 1498 and attributed to Francesco Granacci, is associated with Santa Maria a Cintoia. The attribution to the artist remains an attribution. Villa-fattoria di Cintoia is recognized as a site of historical and cultural significance. Together, the church, artwork and villa-fattoria offer different points of interest for travelers interested in architecture and art.
Historic Trails and Hikes
The Anello di Cintoia is a circular route along old paths in the upper Chianti. It largely follows an old road along the Torrente Sezzate. This section includes stone bridges and old paving dating from the Etruscan period, the Roman Empire, and the Early and High Middle Ages. The route combines hiking with tangible traces of different historical periods; the old road and its paving give the trail a character distinct from that of a simple scenic route.
Near Cintoia, the circular Sentiero della Memoria della Valle di Cintoia trail starts at La Panca. It is rated moderate in difficulty. Between La Panca and Buonasera, there are steep descents and necessary stream crossings at the waterways. A viewpoint between the vineyards of Querceto and Passo del Sugame overlooks the Cintoia Valley and the Monti Scalari opposite. This makes for a distinct hiking recommendation: the Sentiero is described in terms of its difficulty level and challenging sections, while the Anello focuses on its historic route and architectural traces.
The ruins of an old mill can also be seen in the Cintoia Valley.
