Pomonte: Coast, GTE Hiking Trails and Local History
Accommodation in Pomonte
Pomonte offers hikers and those interested in the coast a range of things to explore: circular trails and GTE stages, a beach with pebbles and smooth, rounded stones, and the Elviscot shipwreck. There are also cultural attractions in the village and along another route. When planning, you can therefore choose between specific walking routes, a local circular trail, coastal and underwater attractions, and historic sites.
Hiking Trails Around Pomonte
The Percorso della Valle di Pomonte circular trail runs through the Valle di Pomonte. After a short stretch on the GTE Sud, it follows trail No. 109 and leads to the watershed with Vallebuia. Unlike the GTE stages named after the places they connect, this Percorso is explicitly a circular trail.
The GTE stage from Poggio to Pomonte is 9.26 kilometres long, with an average walking time of about 4 hours and 40 minutes. It follows the ridge separating the Valle di Pomonte from Vallebuia. On the southern GTE stage between Poggio and Pomonte, two caprili can be seen in LocalitĂ Le Mure.
The southern GTE branch from Cavo to Pomonte covers a different scale: it is 47 kilometres long, with a stated walking time of 19 hours and 30 minutes. The comparison puts the figures in context: 9.26 kilometres and about 4 hours and 40 minutes refer to the Poggio–Pomonte stage, while 47 kilometres and 19 hours and 30 minutes refer to the southern branch. The lengths and walking times in the park’s route profiles may be revised in future editions.
Beach, Rocks and Shipwreck
The first beach you reach from the village of Pomonte is made up of pebbles and stones rounded smooth by the sea; the water is especially clear. Another coastal feature is Scoglio dell’Ogliera: the rock lies 200 metres offshore from the beach. The Elviscot shipwreck lies on the seabed nearby and is a popular destination for divers and snorkellers. The wreck is at a depth of 3 to 12 metres and is clearly visible.
From dell’Ogliera beach, you can reach the wreck by diving, swimming, canoe or pedal boat. This offers several different ways to explore the underwater site. On land, you can also set out from Pomonte on foot or by bicycle into the Tuscan Archipelago National Park.
Cultural Attractions and Getting There
The Percorso di San Bartolomeo leads to a plateau near Monte di San Bartolomeo. There stand the ruins of a Romanesque church of the same name. In the village of Pomonte, portraits of Napoleon’s wives can be seen throughout an entire square; the Grande Sedile is located in Piazzetta del Calello. Route attractions and named places in the village thus offer different cultural points of interest.
To reach the western starting points of the GTE, you can take a ferry to Portoferraio and then travel to Pomonte on an Autolinee Toscane bus; route 116 is listed. Timetables and seasonal services may change, so check current departures before travelling.
