La Guardia: Coastal Paths, History and Local Traditions
Accommodation in La Guardia
In La Guardia, coastal paths, the settlement and the surrounding landscape shape the character of the destination. The area around Patresi also adds local history and traditions. If you are looking for a hotel for a trip to La Guardia, these themes offer concrete points to consider when deciding whether the landscape and activities described match your travel interests.
Paths along the cliffs and by the sea
The coastal path at La Guardia is part of the Via dell’Essenza via Sentiero No. 150. The trail starts in La Guardia near Patresi, leads to Zanca and runs right along the cliffs above the sea. The Via dell’Essenza leads to Patresi, passes close to the Faro di Punta Polveraia and continues to the sea. Its route includes abandoned dry-stone walls, old cart tracks and mule paths, as well as newer stretches of road. The two route descriptions therefore differ: Sentiero No. 150 focuses on its destination and coastal course, while the Via dell’Essenza is also characterized by its various types of paths.
The Sentiero per Punta Polveraia is also described as a short path. It can be reached via the paved road leading down to the sea at Patresi. A description of an excursion from 2021 mentions views from Capraia to Corsica along the route between Patresi and Monte Capanne. The Grande Traversata Elbana connects the eastern and western ends of the island; Patresi is one of its endpoints.
The nearby Faro di Punta Polveraia stands on the rocks of the cliff of the same name, 52 metres above the sea. The nearby Spiaggia di Punta Polveraia is also shaped by the coastal landscape: the beach lies in a small cove enclosed by steep cliffs and is covered with white pebbles. Patresi itself lies on a headland that slopes down towards the sea.
History and local traditions
The settlement of La Guardia remained almost unchanged for centuries, until tourism began in the late 1950s. Nearby, the Chapel of Santa Lucia dates back to 1760. On the “Le Vie dei Caprili” route, the second and third Caprile are reached by taking the GTE towards Patresi. Along with its coastal features, these places and trails give the landscape a historical and cultural context.
Another local speciality is the onions of Patresi. They are among the vegetable varieties preserved from extinction on Elba and are considered an example of protecting agricultural biodiversity. The Amici di Patresi e Colle d’Orano association holds a dinner every year at the Patresi landing stage. The date given is 11 August; it varies from year to year. So check the current event dates before your trip.
