Marciana Marina combines a coastline stretching a few kilometres with a history shaped by its harbour, fishing village and seafaring. The beaches, buildings and local history offer concrete points of reference when choosing your destination. If you are looking for a hotel in Marciana Marina, you can first consider whether the coastal character, maritime past or both are especially appealing for your stay.

Harbour, settlement and architectural history

The Torre degli Appiani is a 16th-century bastion that served as a lookout. It was built to protect and monitor the bay of Marciana Marina. The most widely accepted interpretation dates its construction to the years 1558 to 1562, under Jacopo VI Appiano.

The Chiesa di Santa Chiara, an 18th-century church, stands on the Lungomare. Il Cotone is the oldest settlement in Marciana Marina: the first houses were built on the cliff protecting the harbour in the 16th century. Having originated as a fishing village, Il Cotone has retained its original maritime character. Tuna fishing is also part of the coast's history: one of the last two tuna fisheries still operating on Elba was historically active along the Marciana Marina coastline.

Beaches and varied coastal scenery

Marciana Marina has beaches with crystal-clear water, cliffs descending towards the Tyrrhenian Sea and lush Mediterranean vegetation. The coastline, which stretches for a few kilometres, includes pebble beaches and town beaches, as well as a single, recently formed sandy beach in the harbour area.

Spiaggia della Fenicia is the beach closest to Marciana Marina and is considered suitable for children. Spiaggia della Fenicetta is more secluded; a concrete path between the rocks leads to it. Spiaggia della Crocetta is a wild cove surrounded by largely untouched nature. Spiaggia della Cala is near Marciana Marina, quiet and relatively hard to find and reach. The beaches therefore differ not only in their coastal features but also in the characteristics described for each: Fenicia is considered child-friendly, Fenicetta is more secluded, while Cala is comparatively difficult to find and reach.

Diving, sailing and a television setting

Marciana Marina is a starting point for diving trips. Several headlands can be reached from the harbour in just a few minutes and provide access to diving areas. The old harbour is also a destination for sailing enthusiasts. Those familiar with the television series I delitti del BarLume will also recognise the town as a filming location: Marciana Marina served as the series' backdrop, with the seafront representing the fictional coastal town of Pineta.

Gallette, panzanella and Aleatico

Local food culture is also part of Marciana Marina's character. Traditional bakeries still bake gallette, which are essential for making panzanella, a typical summer dish from the island of Elba. Schiaccia briaca is traditionally paired with Aleatico, the island's wine. These two culinary details point to different aspects of the island's cuisine: a summer dish made with gallette and the classic pairing of pastry with local wine.
