Corezzo: Mountain Trails and Village Culture in Vallesanta
Accommodation in Corezzo
Corezzo lies at an altitude of about 760 metres above sea level in the heart of the Foreste Casentinesi. Meadows, small woods and gardens shape the striking mountain landscape around the village. Hiking trails lead from here in several directions; the village’s history, the Ecomuseo and Tortello alla Lastra offer further insights into Vallesanta. Corezzo thus brings nature and local culture together in a compact area.
Landscape and Location
Corezzo lies on the road connecting Chiusi della Verna and Badia Prataglia through the valley of the Torrente Corsalone. The village is also on the road between the Monastero di Camaldoli and the Santuario della Verna. These geographical connections place Corezzo within the surrounding mountain landscape and make it a destination in its own right for travellers interested in the region’s trails and villages.
Hiking Trails from Corezzo
CAI Trail No. 59 passes through Corezzo. From here, it leads west to the hamlet of Frassineta and east to the hamlet of Serra. The municipal trail description also lists the route via Passo di Serra to Bagno di Romagna for Trail No. 59. Another trail, CAI No. 56, also starts in the village and connects with the GEA route below Poggio Magiovanna. These trails offer different points of reference: one takes in the hamlets and the pass, while the other connects to the GEA.
Trek 17 is designated as a circular hike from Corezzo. The outward leg runs via Frassineta and Santicchio, and the return leg via Serra. Along the way, open parts of the valley, old fields and pastures alternate with open oak woods and hazelnut groves. Comparing this loop with the individual directions of CAI Trail No. 59 reveals different route profiles and landscape impressions. Check local trail conditions before setting out.
The Via Romea Germanica also follows a historic route to Corezzo. From Corezzo, a mule track leads to the village of Frassineta. This route complements the CAI trails described above with a historical connection and another way to reach the hamlet.
Village Culture and Local Traditions
Corezzo is part of the Ecomuseo della Vallesanta. The village school houses the museum “Stanza dei ricordi e delle sapienze manuali.” It is dedicated to research and practical projects involving meetings and workshops. If you are planning a visit, confirm current visiting arrangements in advance.
An ancient Medici coat of arms can still be seen on the wall of a building on the main piazza. Local traditions are also part of the area’s cultural character: the Badalischio is a mythical and legendary figure of Vallesanta. Among other things, it is said to have appeared at Campo di Gostinello in Corezzo; these are reported stories from the community, not a regular visitor programme. The “Cantamaggio della Vallesanta” is an event organised by the children of the Corezzo school in the first days of May.
Tortello alla Lastra and Festival Days
Tortello alla Lastra® is a typical speciality of the mountains between Romagna and Tuscany. To prepare it, the dough is worked entirely by hand and rolled out with a rolling pin into a thin sheet. Potato filling is spread over one half; the filled tortello is cooked on a slab of pietra serena. This method of preparation makes the speciality a tangible part of local food culture.
The Sagra del Tortello alla Lastra is the main event organised by Pro Loco Corezzo. The Festa del Tortello alla Lastra takes place every year in August. Its first edition began in 1995 with six tables in the village square. As part of the Festa, the Mercatale della Vallesanta takes place on 12, 13 and 14 August. Check the specific festival dates before travelling.
Corezzo therefore offers several points to consider when choosing a stay: the mountain landscape and hiking trails, visible traces of local history, and a regionally rooted speciality with its own festival tradition. You can choose what interests you most based on the routes described, the cultural offerings and local dates.
