Chitignano – Cultural History, Trails and Springs
Accommodation in Chitignano
For a stay in Chitignano, culture and history offer several specific highlights: the Ecomuseum dedicated to the production and trade of gunpowder, historic trails, buildings from different centuries and the springs. There is also the Fiera del Tordo and a cycling route that leads to Chitignano.
The Ecomuseum and the history of gunpowder
The Ecomuseo del contrabbando e della polvere da sparo documents the production and trade of gunpowder, which shaped Chitignano in the 19th century. In July and August, it is open on public holidays and the days before them from 4:00 to 7:00 pm. If this visit is important to your trip, check the seasonal schedule before you arrive.
Trails with different historical connections
The trails differ in their connection to local history. The Polveriera dell'Inferno trail leads outdoors to one of the largest pilli. The Sentiero del Pillo delle Motte starts at the Ecomuseum. The Sentiero dei Contrabbandieri follows old smuggling routes between Casentino and Val Tiberina. Each trail therefore offers a different, specific connection: a pillo as a destination, the Ecomuseum as a starting point, or historic smuggling routes between two areas. These differences can help you choose a trail based on the subject that interests you most.
Castle, Podesteria and church
The Castello dei Conti Ubertini dates from the 10th century and is located on the road from Rassina to Chiusi della Verna. The ancient Podesteria was established near the castle at the beginning of the 15th century. It preserves a valuable 17th-century fresco of the Annunciation. The Chiesa dei Santi Vincenzo e Pietro was built at the beginning of the 17th century and altered several times. Taken together, the buildings and artworks mentioned here date from the 10th to the 17th century; the church’s history also includes its multiple alterations.
Springs and the history of pilgrimage
The springs are also part of Chitignano’s history. In the Middle Ages, pilgrims travelling towards Rome along the Via Romea Germanica valued the town’s springs. The Sorgente Buca del Tesoro is one of three springs near Chitignano. The municipality has created an equipped green space there, with two separate springs offering two different types of water. Here, the historic connection to the pilgrim route meets the local water landscape.
Fiera del Tordo and cycling route
The Fiera del Tordo has been held in Chitignano on a Sunday in October since the early 19th century. It features food and craft stalls, cultural events and social gatherings. If you would like to include the fair in your travel plans, check the specific event date.
A cycling route leads from Bibbiena railway station to the Santuario de La Verna and then to Chitignano. Unlike the trails connected to gunpowder and smuggling, it offers another point of interest: its named stops link the station, the Santuario and Chitignano in that order. This gives you a choice of different themes for your trip—from local history and springs to a route connected with pilgrimage.
