Discover Terranuova Bracciolini
Accommodation in Terranuova Bracciolini
Terranuova Bracciolini offers several distinct starting points for planning a trip: its history as a fortified settlement with a rectangular urban layout, cultural venues, the Balze, and recurring event dates. If you are looking for a hotel for your stay, you can consider these as different focal points; the event dates also provide a specific time frame.
City History and Culture
Terranuova Bracciolini was founded as a fortified Florentine settlement; construction began in 1337. Its rectangular urban layout is still recognizable and is considered typical of the fortified Florentine new towns. The settlement’s founding and its layout are therefore linked: its historical character is revealed not only by the date, but also by its surviving urban form. For travelers interested in urban planning, this connection offers a tangible way to explore the town’s history.
The Le Fornaci cultural center is located in a fully restored former brickworks. Since 2005, it has housed the municipal library and an auditorium in a shared cultural space. The conversion adds a different historical perspective to the town: alongside its fortified origins is the transformation of a former production building into cultural facilities.
The pre-unification historical archive is located in Palazzo Concini, at Via Concini 3. It contains documents produced by the Municipality of Terranuova from its founding until 1865, as well as extensive records relating to the municipality, the Podesteria, and the former municipality of Castiglion Ubertini. The time span and the different municipal connections give the collections a broad historical perspective.
The Balze and Their Trails
The Balze are landforms shaped by erosion. Their features include vertical walls, isolated rock towers, narrow ridges, and earth pyramids. Since 1998, the Balze have been designated a locally protected natural area of particular interest (ANPIL). Their landforms and protected status offer two different points of reference for exploring this natural area.
Some viewpoints over the Balze can be reached via municipal roads connecting different districts. Some trails can be traveled on horseback or by mountain bike. For a hiking option, the Sentiero dell’Acqua Zolfina is a circular route through the Balze landscape: it is just over seven kilometers long, marked CAI 51, and has no particular hiking difficulties.
The Valle dell’Inferno and Bandella nature reserves offer a different connection with nature. The lake and wetland there form an important resting place for a diverse range of waterbirds. This gives the destination distinct natural highlights: the Balze are known for their erosional landforms, while Valle dell’Inferno and Bandella are characterized by their lake, wetland, and waterbirds.
Events and Regional Products
The Festa del Perdono and the Fiera dell’Antiquariato differ chiefly in how often they take place. The Festa del Perdono is held every September and has a history spanning more than four centuries. The Fiera dell’Antiquariato traditionally takes place on the second Sunday of every month in the squares of Terranuova Bracciolini’s historic center. If you want to plan your trip around either event, check the specific date before making your plans.
Two products showcase the region in different ways: Fagiolo Zolfino is a typical product of the Terranuova Bracciolini area and is designated DOCG; Pancetta Tarese, produced in Terranuova Bracciolini, is a Slow Food Presidio.
