Talla: Hiking, History and Local Specialties
Accommodation in Talla
Get to know Talla through its hiking routes, historic sites and regional specialties. If you’re looking for a hotel in Talla, these themes can help you decide what to focus on during your trip: a cycling or walking tour, the connection to Guido Monaco, or a look at local festivals and food.
Hiking Routes and Trail Layout
The Via dei Ponti Antichi Nord-SĂĽd is a 14.2-kilometer out-and-back route for hiking, cycling and horseback riding. The Gran Tour is 29.9 kilometers long and is a loop for hiking, cycling and horseback riding. You can distinguish the two routes by their length and layout: one is an out-and-back route, while the other is a loop.
The Gran Tour covers almost the entire municipal area of Talla, and about 95 percent of it runs over natural terrain. It starts and ends in Piazza Licio Nencetti, in the center of Talla. There is an e-bike charging station near the fountain in the piazza. This means the loop’s start and finish, and the charging option mentioned, are both located in a specific spot in the town center.
Original stone paving can be seen along the Via dei Ponti Antichi Nord-Süd, particularly near Ponte di Annibale and between Pontenano and Passo della Crocina. The medieval Ponte di Sasso is also located on this route; it has been preserved and is open to pedestrians. For those interested in historic features along the way, these are further specific points of interest, in addition to the route’s length.
La Castellaccia and Guido Monaco
In the upper part of Talla lies the medieval village of La Castellaccia, the old center of Talla. The Casa natale di Guido Monaco is located there, in a building dating from the 10th century. Guido Monaco was born in this house between 992 and 995. The area’s historical connection and the building’s history can thus be considered together.
The Casa natale di Guido Monaco exhibition includes instruments and illuminated codices from the monastery of La Verna. Guido Monaco is considered the inventor of musical notation. Together, his birth in this place, the exhibits and his significance for musical notation offer insight into the connection between local history and the history of music. A visit requires advance booking; before your trip, check whether a visit is currently possible and what arrangements apply.
Another historic landmark is the Church of San Niccolò in Piazza Licio Nencetti. It was built by the Compagnia del Sacramento in 1644. The piazza, which is also the start and finish of the Gran Tour, therefore connects the loop route with a building from the town’s history.
Festivals and Specialties
The Sagra del cacio e dei baccelli takes place every year in the first few days of May. If you’d like to include it in your plans, check that year’s program before your trip. The Corsa del Saracino di Talla is also associated with the Sagra del dolce casalingo, a festival of homemade desserts. The Corsa is a medieval event; it originated in Talla in the second half of the 18th century. For specific event dates, it’s also a good idea to check the annual program.
Local chestnut-based specialties include Ballotte or Baloci, Tigliate and sweet polenta. These names add a culinary connection to Talla alongside its historical and landscape themes. If you’d like to plan your trip around local festivals or food, you can make them a focus of your visit, alongside the routes and historic sites.
