Ossana: Hotels between cultural heritage and starry skies
Accommodation in Ossana
If you’re looking for a hotel in Ossana, the focus of your trip can be a good place to start: historic buildings and art sit alongside walking and cycling routes, seasonal offerings and a GOLD award for its starry skies. This lets you put the places and activities you want to define your stay at the centre of your plans.
Cultural history and art in Ossana
At Castello San Michele, the castle’s origins and written records are two distinct historical points of reference. The castle is thought to date back to the Lombard period, between the 6th and 8th centuries; the first written records date from 1191. The keep rises 25 metres above the village lanes. This brings together a cautiously dated early origin and a specific date for the first written records.
In the historic centre, between the Church of San Vigilio and the Castello, stands Casa degli Affreschi, a rare medieval house. Its fresco cycle depicts religious and secular scenes. Some stylistic and iconographic features point to the work of the Baschenis, while others reflect Venetian influence. The Church of San Vigilio is a medieval parish church.
Another art-historical highlight is the Stuva Nova at the Fondazione San Vigilio. This elegant room was created around 1740 at the behest of Archpriest Ludovico Isidoro Ignazio Rovereti. Carved and decorated Swiss pine walls, a Baroque stove with mythological motifs and seven 18th-century oil paintings define the interior; the paintings depict sacred scenes. The Stuva Nova can be visited free of charge during the Fondazione San Vigilio’s opening hours or by telephone appointment on 0463 751301. Call to arrange your visit for your preferred date.
A Way of the Cross also leads to historic artworks: on Colle Tomino, it runs over the hill and around the Church of Sant'Antonio da Padova. The route passes painted wayside shrines dating from 1733 to 1739.
Trails, cycling and seasonal offerings
The signposted trail to Giardino dei Sensi starts at Piazza San Vigilio. It is designed for people with visual impairments and can only be travelled on foot. As trail conditions can change, check the route before setting out.
During the summer months, BoscoDerniga offers, among other things, astronomy evenings and workshops for children. Ossana is also known for a seasonal exhibition featuring more than 1,600 distinctive, handcrafted nativity scenes. They are made by associations, groups, schools, families, artists and residents of Ossana and the entire Val di Sole.
The Borgo di Ossana holds the GOLD award “I cieli più belli d'Italia” for protecting the quality of its starry skies. The award is therefore another point of interest for travellers who are interested in astronomy and the night sky.
The Val di Sole Cycle Path runs from the San Leonardo ponds along the Vermigliana River to Castello San Michele in Ossana. The section from Ossana to Mezzana alternates between flat stretches and gentle descents. Mountain biking conditions can change; check the route status before setting off. Another route option is the Valpiana snowshoe route from the Church of San Vigilio in Ossana to Valpiana. Near Ossana, Valpiana is a flat basin crossed by the Foce stream.
Landscape, regional cuisine and getting around
The approach to Malga Valpiana passes through a deciduous forest at the foot of high rock faces and by the Cascata del Sass Pisador waterfall. At the malga, traditional dishes are prepared with products sourced directly from the alpine pasture, including butter, cheese, ricotta and yoghurt. The landscape and cuisine offer different points of interest around the same named place.
East of Ossana, Parco della Pace occupies a former Austro-Hungarian military cemetery. More than 1,400 soldiers who died in the First World War are buried there. The site offers a distinct historical perspective alongside the town’s medieval architecture and art.
Ossana is served by the Trentino Trasporti Malè–Mezzana–Fucine–Cogolo–Peio bus route. Routes and timetables can change; check your connection before travelling.
