Ceniga – Trails, the Sarca and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Ceniga
Ceniga lies in the Sarca Valley, about 5 km from Arco (via the SS45bis). The Ponte Romano di Ceniga is a landmark for walking and cycling routes, as well as for historical themes. The routes described differ: one connects two bridges, another runs from Arco to Fies, and a further trail starts at the Ponte Romano.
Bridges and Scenery Along the Sentiero Campagnola
The Sentiero Campagnola connects the ancient Ponte Romano di Ceniga with the bridge in the nearby village of Dro. You can walk or cycle along it. Dry-stone walls, unpaved paths, olive groves, and vineyards shape the landscape along the route. It can therefore be described not only by its two bridges, but also by its changing landscape features. Whether walking or cycling, it remains the same route; the choice of transport does not change the stated endpoints.
A small beach lies beneath the Ponte Romano, where you can cool off after a bike ride. This makes it possible to combine a visit to the bridge with a break by the water. As route conditions may change, check the latest trail information before setting out.
Trail Names and Wayfinding
The “Scaloni–Cavre–Anglone” trail starts at the Ponte Romano, follows the road towards Maso Lizzone, and then joins trail SAT428. The names “Cavre” and “Scaloni” refer to cableway support portals and to stairs that make the climb easier on difficult sections. Both the sequence of trail sections and the names therefore offer clues to different aspects of the route: its described course and the features associated with the climb.
Cycling from Arco to Fies
Another distinct route is the easy cycling tour from Arco to Fies. It follows the Sarca northwards, along a cycle path and secondary roads, and passes through orchards, vineyards, and small settlements. Its destination is the protected Marocche area, which is included in the European Natura 2000 network of protected areas as a Site of Community Importance. Unlike the Sentiero Campagnola, this route is defined not by two bridges as endpoints, but by the sequence of the river’s course, settlements, and the protected area as its destination. Vineyards feature in both route descriptions; the other landscape features distinguish the tours. Check current route and protected-area conditions before setting out.
Historical Connections
The origins of the so-called Ponte Romano di Ceniga are uncertain. It probably served in earlier times as a crossing over the Sarca, where the old routes from Arco and Laghel reached the hamlet of Ceniga. This possible former function connects the bridge with the river and the old routes, without presenting its origins as certain.
At the Rievocazione Storica Dro, around 200 people take part in the Corteo Storico, wearing 17th-century clothing and representing all social classes. The procession thus offers a different historical focus from the uncertain origins of the Ponte Romano: here, the emphasis is on clothing and the portrayal of different social classes. The “Tesori di Arte Sacra ad Arco” circuit also passes through the hamlet of Ceniga, adding a connection to sacred art to the choice of routes.
