Padergnone combines a rich history of Vino Santo with traces of its milling heritage and trails through the village and surrounding area. This offers visitors a range of ways to explore: wine traditions and landscapes, historic workplaces, and hiking and cycling routes. The old village lies in a glacially shaped depression facing the lake district. Thanks to the climate moderated by the Ora del Garda, Padergnone is one of the last remaining places in the Sarca Valley where olives grow.

Vino Santo and the landscape

Padergnone was a center for Vino Santo production and is considered the birthplace of nursery gardening in Trentino. The wine tradition is also connected to specific places in the village: Casa Caveau Vino Santo is an interactive space dedicated to Vino Santo DOC, housed in Padergnone’s former drying house. A short walk leads from the car park at Parco del Lago di Santa Massenza to Piazzetta del Mercato, where Casa Caveau is located. Along the way, seven interpretive stops explain the history of Vino Santo.

The Vino Santo Trail connects Casa Caveau with Parco del Lago di Santa Massenza. This links a place to learn about the wine with the park as points of interest along the route. If you are planning a visit to Casa Caveau, check the booking details before travelling. The surrounding landscape complements the wine theme with the particular climatic conditions that allow olives to continue growing in Padergnone.

Routes between the village and the lake district

The Anello Vezzano–Fraveggio–Padergnone is an 8.6-kilometre circular route that passes through Padergnone and is suitable for hiking or mountain biking. In Padergnone, it leads to the old Church of Santi Filippo e Giacomo and the war memorial. The Sentiero della Nosiola, dove il vino si fa Santo includes the Sottovi di Padergnone and is described as a circular route with four stages. Lengths vary from 5 to 20 kilometres, depending on the stage or tour. This offers two different ways to plan a route: a circular trail with a stated total distance and a tour made up of several stages. Check the trail surfaces before setting out.

The Ciclabile dei Laghi connects Padergnone with Lago di Terlago over approximately 10 kilometres. Here, too, it is advisable to check trail conditions before setting out. The routes offer different experiences: the Anello is designated as a circular trail for hiking and mountain biking, while the Ciclabile links Padergnone with Lago di Terlago. Walking or cycling times cannot be determined from the stated distances.

Mills and architectural history

The old mills trail begins mainly at the intersection of Via XII Maggio and Via San Valentino. It passes through the Vòlti dei Caschi and along Via Montagnola and Via di Pendè. At Mólin dela Gióana, millstones on display along the route recall the mill’s former use. Mòlin dei Pradi was used to grind grain and polish barley; its activity is documented from the 17th and 18th centuries. The mill ceased operations in the 1920s.

A mill built by the Miori family in 1901 had a modern roller mill and a bakery. The history of milling can thus be explored through its different functions: grinding grain and polishing barley on the one hand, and a roller mill and bakery on the other. The parish church of Santi Filippo e Giacomo is another historic landmark. Its Renaissance structure features Baroque alterations and stands on the circular trail, which also leads to the war memorial.
