Eggen: Village history, hiking trails and mountain scenery
Accommodation in Eggen
Eggen is a mountain village at 1,120 m. When choosing where to stay, several specific perspectives come together: the parish church of St. Nicholas and the historic farmstead group “Städtl” in Ega, two hikes starting in the village center, and the Latemar Dolomites ski area, five minutes from Eggen. When looking for a hotel in Eggen, you can first consider whether the village itself, a hike on foot or winter sports will shape your stay.
Mountain village and landscape
The landscape around Eggen includes evergreen forests, peaks, meadows, snow-covered areas and far-reaching views. This mountain scenery is a distinct focus for planning your trip, alongside the village church, farmstead group and hiking trails. You can get to know Eggen through both its local history and the surrounding landscape.
Church and farming heritage
The parish church of St. Nicholas in Ega is one of the village’s landmarks; its Gothic bell tower is a distinctive feature of the church building. The church is associated with a local belief: in Eggen, people believed that St. Nicholas protected the village from the rushing waters of the Sambach and Geroldbach streams.
The historic “Städtl” farmstead group, including the Gerberhof, still conveys what rural life was like in times gone by. The church and farmstead group show different sides of local history: St. Nicholas brings together church architecture and religious tradition, while the Städtl offers a glimpse of earlier farming ways of life.
Hikes starting in the village center
The family hike starts in the center of Eggen and follows trail 7A through meadows and forests to the traditional Grott-Hof, one of the historic Eggen farmsteads. A second hike leads from the village center over the Samberg and along trails 7 and S to the Häusler Sam Buschenschank. Both hikes therefore start in the center but offer different experiences: the route to the Grott-Hof combines a walk through the landscape with a visit to a historic farmstead; the other route goes over the Samberg to a Buschenschank. Your choice also depends on which destination appeals to you more. Trail conditions may vary by season; check them before setting out.
Ski area and bus access
The Latemar Dolomites ski area is five minutes from Eggen and includes ski slopes and toboggan runs. This offers a choice of two different winter sports activities. The ski area operates seasonally; check current conditions before planning your trip around it.
The parish church of St. Nicholas is accessible by public bus. The bus stop is called “Ega, Chiesa/Eggen, Kirche.” Check the timetables before travelling so you can plan your connection for your visit.
