If you’re looking for a hotel in Kastelruth, the village’s different attractions can help guide your trip planning: local history, short walks or trails through the surrounding countryside. In the historic village center, you’ll find painted façades, museums and distinctive buildings; outside the center, hiking and biking tours take center stage.

Local History in the Center

The façades of Mendelhaus, Edenberg, Landhaus and Wolfwirt in the historic village center were painted by local artist Eduard Burgauner. Kastelruth’s bell tower is 82 meters high and has 298 wooden steps. The costume museum in the historic Laechler building in the center displays traditional costumes and accessories from the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. In this way, different aspects of local history come together in the village center: decorated house façades, a tall bell tower and clothing from three centuries.

In St. Oswald, a district of Kastelruth, the farmers’ museum is housed in the old hay barn of the Tschötscherhof farm, owned by the Jaider family. It documents the lives, faith and hard work of past generations and farmers. Contemporary objects and various agricultural tools illustrate the themes of the exhibition. The history of education is also part of local history: when compulsory schooling was introduced in the 18th century, there was a primary school in Tagusa.

Museums and Sightseeing

The school museum in Tagusa near Kastelruth has been open since 2005. Its special collection includes furnishings and teaching documents preserved at their original location. The museum is open Wednesdays and Sundays from 2:00 to 5:30 p.m.; no advance booking is required. Check the opening hours again before your arrival.

The Spatzen Museum provides information about the musical group Kastelruther Spatzen; you can also buy a wide selection of souvenirs there. Opening arrangements may change, so it’s a good idea to check the latest information before visiting. A booking is required for a guided tour of the Pflegerhof in St. Vigil, where you can learn about the cultivation of medicinal and culinary herbs.

Walks, Hikes and Bike Tours

In the heart of the village is the Kofel, a porphyry hill that serves as a local recreation area and a Way of the Cross, and offers activities for children. The well-maintained circular trail over the Kofel, also known as Monte Calvario, passes through picturesque scenery and is suitable for short walks, including with a stroller. Check local conditions before setting out. For a short walk in the village, the Kofel offers a different setting from the extensive network of hiking trails.
