Tre Fontane: Coast, Dunes and Marian Procession
Accommodation in Tre Fontane
Tre Fontane takes its name from a number of natural watercourses that emerge and flow into the sea. The coast of Tre Fontane stretches for more than six kilometres; to the east, it connects with Triscina Beach, and to the west, with the Lido of Torretta Granitola. This offers different perspectives for a seaside stay: dunes, seasonal nature, beach facilities and cycling excursions.
Dunes and seasonal nature
The beach is characterised by high dunes with sea daffodils, also called San Pancrazio lilies, and dense succulent vegetation consisting of Carpobrotus edulis. On the dunes towards Tre Fontane, pink Silene colorata and white sea daffodils bloom in spring. The plant life combines a distinctive dune landscape with a seasonal springtime highlight.
Sea turtles are another seasonal natural feature of the beach: in 2025, a Caretta caretta nest was recorded there; numerous sea turtles had already nested the previous year. Nesting activity is seasonal and not guaranteed. These details therefore do not provide a reliable expectation for every visit.
Beach and cycling excursions
Beach facilities are limited to certain stretches: at some sections of the beach, bathing establishments offer parasols, sun loungers, toilets, showers and beach volleyball courts. Seasonal availability may vary, so do not assume that the same facilities are available at every section. Lido Coco Loco Beach at Piazza Favoroso 22 has a Sand & Sea chair, Solemar equipment, a walkway, accessible showers and qualified staff. Confirm seasonal opening before your visit.
Lungomare Est and Lungomare Ovest are suitable for cycling excursions. Either is an option if you would like to add a bike ride to your stay. The two activities can be planned separately: for beach facilities, check the specific stretch of beach; for cycling excursions, both Lungomare routes are suitable. This helps you distinguish between beach facilities tied to particular sections and a cycling option.
History and religious tradition
Until the 19th century, the Torre di Tre Fontane was part of Sicily’s coastal defence and observation system. Its history adds a historical perspective on the area to the coastal and natural landscape.
Every year on 15 August, the statue of the Assumption of Mary is carried by motorboat along the western and eastern sections of the beach. If you would like to attend the celebration, check the specific arrangements for that year in advance.
An account from August 2025 describes the Imbarco della Madonna as a procession in which the statue of the Madonna is brought to the beach and then out to sea. Prayers, songs and applause are part of the event, which involves residents, tourists and worshippers. Check locally for details of future programmes.
