Kamma: Terraces, Trails and History
Accommodation in Kamma
Khamma and Tracino are among the greenest districts on the eastern side of Pantelleria. Terraced slopes descend there to the sea, connecting the vineyards of the Piana della Ghirlanda with the fertile lands of Mueggen. Trails, local history and wine add distinct themes to this landscape for planning your trip.
Trails and Landscape
A route description published by the operator in June 2022 describes the Cammino di Khamma as a 15-minute, gently uphill walk through terraces and dry-stone walls to a viewpoint. Its short walking time makes it a clearly defined part of your day’s plans; the route brings together physical activity and terraced scenery.
The main section of the Sentiero romano del Khaggiár can be reached by car or local bus from Punta Spadillo or Cala Cinque Denti. If you plan to take the bus, check the timetable before setting off; the service may change. For the Cammino, the focus is on walking time, while the Sentiero involves choosing your access point and mode of transport.
Trail number 4 at Punta Spadillo adds a historical dimension. Hikers encounter numerous remnants from the Second World War, including bunkers, gun emplacements and defensive posts. These structures also make the trail interesting to travelers interested in the island’s military history.
On Pantelleria, Punta Spadillo is also a protected coastal area with lava cliffs, hidden coves and natural pools. This adds a distinctive coastal character to the terraced landscape.
Church and Remembrance
The Church of San Francesco is located in Contrada Khamma and is documented as early as 1552. Its patron saint’s feast day falls on October 4. The date 1552 marks its early mention; October 4 is the day of its patron saint’s feast.
The military cemetery of Khamma is also a historical testament to the Second World War. Around 30 soldiers, believed to be Italian or foreign, who fell in the war are buried there. The cemetery focuses attention on the fallen; trail number 4, on the military remains.
The historical themes also span different periods: San Francesco is documented as early as 1552, while the cemetery and trail number 4 are associated with the Second World War. The historical points of interest thus range from the 16th century to the Second World War.
