Erice: Towers, Churches and Ancient Town Walls
Accommodation in Erice
Erice brings together buildings and traces from different eras in its historic centre. The Mura Elimo-Puniche, Norman towers, churches and collections offer different ways to explore the town’s history. Torre di Re Federico adds a panoramic view across the town and surrounding sea. If you’re looking for a hotel in Erice, its architecture, religious heritage, museum collections and crafts can provide a concrete starting point for planning your trip.
Towers, Walls and Layers of History
Torretta Pepoli stands in Giardino del Balio, an elegant building in the Moorish style. Count Agostino Pepoli sponsored its construction around 1870. The garden’s history is also connected with his work: at the end of the 19th century, Giardino del Balio was restored as a public garden. After extensive restoration, completed in 2014, Torretta was returned to the public as the Osservatorio Permanente di Pace and Faro del Mediterraneo.
Torre di Re Federico is a watchtower of Norman origin in the historic centre. From there, panoramic views stretch across the town and surrounding sea. The Mura Elimo-Puniche reveal another layer of history: this historic monument dates back to the 7th century BC and is associated with the Elymians. The surviving walls extend for about 700 metres around the village. The best-preserved section runs along Via dell’Addolorata between Porta Carmine and Porta Spada—a useful landmark for a walk along the walls.
Castello di Venere also brings together different eras. Its present form dates from Norman times; before that, the Romans built the Temple of Venus Erycina on this site. The structures therefore differ both in when they were built and in their histories: the watchtower, castle and fortifications each represent a distinct part of the town’s past.
Churches and Religious History
Chiesa San Giuliano stands at the highest point of the historic centre and is considered one of the town’s most important sites of religious life. According to local tradition, Count Ruggero d’Altavilla had the church built in 1076 out of gratitude to San Giuliano, who had helped during the siege of the Monte.
Duomo di Erice, also known as Chiesa Matrice, stands near Porta Trapani and is considered the town’s most important religious building. The Tesoro del Duomo preserves valuable silver collections, among the most significant in all of Sicily. Smaller historical details are also part of the religious heritage: Chiesa San Martino is one of Erice’s oldest religious buildings. Chiesa di Sant’Orsola was built in 1413 and retains its original Gothic rib vaults.
Museums and Cultural Institutions
Museo Cordici was founded in 1876 in the former monastery of the Third Order of St Francis. Its purpose was to bring together works of art from Val di Erice and present the area’s history. Its sections cover archaeology, decorative arts, weapons, sculpture, paintings and contemporary art. There is also a room for temporary exhibitions. Guided tours of Museo Cordici are available on request. If you plan to take a tour, check current availability before your visit.
Former monastery buildings also shape Erice’s cultural institutions. Istituto Blackett is located in the former monastery of San Domenico and is one of the sites of the Fondazione Ettore Majorana e Centro di Cultura Scientifica. The former monastery of San Francesco now houses Istituto Wigner. Museo Cordici and the institutes represent different aspects of the town’s cultural life: a museum with collection sections and institutions housed in former monasteries.
Crafts in Erice
The ancient art of carpet weaving continues in Erice to this day. Small shops in the medieval town offer colourful carpets in various sizes. Hand-decorated ceramics are also available in Erice. These crafts add another perspective on the town alongside its historic buildings: walls, churches and collections share the spotlight with handmade goods and skilled craftsmanship.
