Ciavolo appeals to travelers who want to include landscapes, nature and local cultural heritage in their trip. Parco delle Cave combines terraces and tunnels with distinctive birdlife; Bosco Madonna Ciavolo complements this natural setting with its varied woodland. Other highlights include the Church of Madonna della Cava, a longstanding procession tradition and the rural building complex of Baglio Spanò. If you are looking for a hotel in Ciavolo, you can start by considering whether landscapes, a guided tour or cultural history will be the focus of your trip.

Parco delle Cave and nature

Parco delle Cave stretches across terraces at different heights, forming a “hidden city” connected by unpaved paths and tunnels. Protected birds, including bee-eaters, nest in the park’s rock crevices. The stepped layout of the terrain and its birdlife are two distinct features of the park.

Bosco Madonna Ciavolo offers a different aspect of nature: pine trees, eucalyptus and oaks create varied woodland, alongside vegetation typical of the Mediterranean maquis. While terraces and tunnels characterize Parco delle Cave, trees and maquis plants take center stage in the Bosco. If you are planning your trip around landscape themes, these different features can offer a useful guide.

Tour and directions

A guided tour of Parco delle Cave lasts 90 minutes, 15 of which are spent underground in the quarry tunnels. The underground portion is therefore included in the total duration. If you are planning to take the tour, check the latest information before your visit, as operational details may change.

Parco delle Cave is located at Via Margi 6/d, 91025 Ciavolo, Italy. In summer 2026, city bus line 2/5 ran from Marsala to Ciavolo via Ciancio, Digerbato and Ciavolotto. If you plan to travel by bus, check the timetable for your travel date.

Church and religious tradition

The local church history includes the Church of Madonna della Cava in Contrada Ciavolo. It was built in 1893 at the expense of the faithful and has a bell tower. On June 28, 1943, Bishop Guercio elevated the church to parish status. The construction and its later elevation to parish status mark different dates in the history of the church.

Every year on May 18, a festival is held in Contrada Ciavolo, during which a copy of the image of Madonna della Cava, together with its shrine, is carried in a procession. The celebration commemorates the 1828 earthquake. While the church’s elevation to parish status marks a specific date in its history, the procession keeps a recurring religious tradition alive.

Baglio Spanò and rural architecture

Baglio Spanò, also known as Baglio Grande, is located in Borgata Ciavolo. The extensive rural building complex includes a long driveway shaded by oak trees. The complex adds another architectural connection to Ciavolo alongside its religious buildings. Together, the church and the baglio show different aspects of the area’s cultural heritage, without implying that they share the same architectural form or history.
