If you’re looking for a hotel in Pantelleria, it’s worth first deciding what you want to focus on during your stay: volcanic landscapes, hiking, archaeological history or viticulture. These themes offer different directions for planning your trip—from routes through the national park to insights into traditional agriculture.

Volcanic Landscapes and Special Natural Sites

The Parco Nazionale Isola di Pantelleria covers about 80 percent of the island. Pantelleria is an active volcanic complex; surface features include fumaroles and hydrothermal hot springs found across the island. Geological features therefore shape not only the landscape but also specific natural sites.

In the north lies Lago di Venere, also known as the Mirror of Venus, within the national park. Three thermal springs feed the volcanic lake; its water temperature ranges from 35 to 58 °C. At the same time, the lake is an important habitat for migratory birds. Nature enthusiasts will therefore find both a geological and an ecological point of interest at this named site.

Balata dei Turchi is a bay at the foot of cliffs that reach almost 300 meters in some places. An approximately four-kilometer unpaved road leads from the main road to the sea; access conditions may change. The Arco dell’Elefante is accessible both from the sea and from land. These coastal sites complement the island’s volcanic inland landscapes with striking rock formations and seascapes.

Alberello Viticulture and Cultural Heritage

The traditional agricultural practice of Vite ad Alberello of the community of Pantelleria was added to the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2014. The vines are cultivated in hollows about 20 centimeters deep. These collect rainwater and protect the grapes from the wind. Zibibbo grapes from the alberello vineyards are used to make Passito di Pantelleria.

The cultural route devoted to Vite ad Alberello can be completed in one day by car or bicycle. Other possible activities on Pantelleria include agricultural experiences such as the grape harvest or caper harvest; participation depends on the seasonal program. Other alternatives include a tasting at a winery and a sunset walk among rows of Zibibbo vines. The traditional festivals Cappero Fest and the Pantelleria Carnival offer additional cultural highlights; check the respective event dates when planning your trip.

The traditional dammuso building style is also associated with the island: dry-stone walls and a domed roof characterize this architecture, regarded as a natural response to the volcanic landscape and harsh climate. For those interested in archaeology, a route traces Pantelleria’s key settlement periods, from prehistory to the end of the Roman Empire. The village and necropolis of Mursía are classified by the national park as sites of international value; the Punic-Roman sanctuary at the lake is classified as a site of national value.

Hiking Trails and Choosing a Route

Pantelleria’s trail network comprises 23 trails with a total length of just under 130 kilometers. Topics range from natural history and geology to history and rural life. There are both point-to-point hikes and circular routes. The park’s trekking selection consists of circular routes; its medium- to long-distance routes range from 7 to 15 kilometers.

As an individual longer hike, Trail No. 972 connects Punta Spadillo, Bagno dell’Acqua and Montagna Grande. The route is 13 kilometers long, rated E – Hiking – and has a stated walking time of 3 hours and 30 minutes. For current planning, the national park recommends checking with its information points to find out whether the trails are actually passable. The Kaggiar trail offers a different focus: it follows an old Roman road through dense Mediterranean maquis.

Experiences on Land and in the Water

At Gadir, guided dives with marker buoys take divers through a field of more than 100 Punic, Greco-Italic and Roman amphorae. In the small harbor, three shipwrecks dating from the 3rd to the 1st century BC also lie one above another. If you’re considering a dive, check the availability of guided excursions before your trip. Gadir’s hot waters also offer natural bathing opportunities; check bathing conditions and access locally.

The Grotta di BenikulĂ  is a natural sauna carved into the rock; check access conditions locally. Pantelleria is served by Pantelleria Airport (PNL). Buses and electric minibuses also run along the main roads. Flight connections and public transport schedules and routes may change, so checking the latest information is helpful when planning your trip.
