Plaja Grande combines a golden sandy beach with a coastal landscape of dunes and Mediterranean scrub. The village’s more recent character and its protected areas also shape the place. If you’re planning a hotel stay in Plaja Grande, you can consider whether the beach, coastal walks or the protected landscape are especially important to your trip.

Beach and village character

Spiaggia di Plaja Grande is a sandy beach with golden sand. The seabed slopes gently towards the open sea. One local restriction is important when planning a swim: swimming is not allowed in one area of Spiaggia di Plaja Grande. Take this restriction into account when planning.

Plaja Grande is a newer village dating from the late 1960s, with a typically American-influenced layout. Alongside its natural coastal features, the village’s more recent development is also part of the character of the place. If the village’s layout matters to you as well as the beach, this context offers another perspective on Plaja Grande.

Dunes, Mediterranean scrub and protected areas

The Macchia Foresta del Fiume Irminio nature reserve was established in June 1985 to protect the coastal biocoenosis, rare Mediterranean scrub-forest vegetation and the Irminio River ecosystem. It includes the river mouth, sandy Mediterranean coasts, cliffs sloping down to the sea and wind-driven shifting dunes. Sea juniper and mastic shrubs grow on the dune crests. The river mouth, coastal formations and vegetation thus represent different aspects of this protected landscape.

The coastal dune system is designated as habitat type 2250* “Coastal dunes with juniper” within the Natura 2000 protected area ZSC ITA 080001 “Foce del Fiume Irminio.” The Foce del Fiume Irminio nature reserve is also located near Plaja Grande.

An area designation dated August 2026 places Plaja Grande within the landscape of the Macchia Foresta della Foce del Fiume Irminio protected area and gives it landscape protection level 3, the highest level. It also lists Biotope No. 38, “Plaia Grande-Marina di Ragusa,” partly because of its dune system and associated vegetation. Plaja Grande lies within the Natura 2000 site ZSC ITA080001 “Foce del Fiume Irminio.” The protected-area names and classifications provide a specific framework for understanding the beach, dunes and Mediterranean scrub as part of a larger coastal landscape.

Walks and getting there

West of Plaja Grande, a nearby path leads through typical local flora to the beach in the Foce del Fiume Irminio nature reserve. Plaja Grande also offers walks along the coast with views of the Mediterranean. The two options have different emphases: the path to the west has a named destination, the beach in the nature reserve; the coastal walk is defined by its sea views. When planning, you can therefore choose between a route with a destination beach and a walk along the coast.

Plaja Grande can be reached from Scicli by local bus services, taxi or private transport services. Before travelling, check the availability of local transport and plan according to your specific travel dates.
