Santa Maria Del Focallo combines a long beach with a dune landscape and archaeological history. This gives you several possible focuses for your trip: the coast, underwater finds, and a cultural excursion in the wider Ispica area. If you are looking for a hotel, it may help to first decide which of these aspects you want to shape your stay.

Beach, dunes, and seasonal services

Santa Maria Del Focallo beach is about eight kilometers long. It is characterized by golden sand, clear water, and a seabed that slopes gently toward the open sea. Behind the beach, some sections have low dunes with dense Mediterranean scrub. The long stretch of coast and the dune areas describe different sides of the landscape. When getting your bearings, it is also worth looking at the beach services: Unlike the length of the coast and the dunes that occur in some sections, these may vary by season. The landscape describes the area, while the beach services provide the practical framework for a beach visit.

The beach has a beach bar, sun lounger and parasol rentals, and bathing establishments. These services may vary by season. If you plan to use a particular service during your stay, check its availability for your travel dates. This will help you take seasonal availability into account when planning.

Isola dei Porri is designated as Natura 2000 site ITA080005.

Underwater archaeology

A shipwreck dating from the 6th–5th centuries BC was discovered in the waters off Santa Maria Del Focallo, together with four stone anchors and two iron anchors. The wreck lay at a depth of six meters and was buried beneath sand and boulders.

Underwater investigations at the wreck also uncovered the ship’s mast, black-figure pottery, a small ointment vessel bearing the Greek inscription “NAU,” and a piece of rope. Together with the anchors, these finds give the archaeological history a concrete connection. The mast, pottery, inscribed vessel, and rope represent different kinds of objects from the find.

A cultural excursion in the Ispica area

In the wider Ispica area, the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore is considered one of the most outstanding examples of Sicilian Baroque. It offers a different cultural focus from the shipwreck off Santa Maria Del Focallo: the basilica centers on sacred Baroque architecture, while the wreck is an example of ancient underwater archaeology. These two subjects can therefore be included in your travel plans as different historical perspectives.

Find a hotel to suit your travel plans

If you would also like to include a cultural excursion in the wider Ispica area, take this broader geographical context into account when planning.
