Valledolmo offers two clearly defined themes for planning a trip: a history of buildings with historic residences and churches, and a local tomato tradition reflected in festivals and production. If you are looking for a hotel in town, you can plan your stay around whether you are most interested in the buildings, seasonal festivities, or both. The following places and dates offer specific points of reference.

Historic Buildings and Their Features

Baglio Castellana, also known as Palazzo Cutelli, is a historic aristocratic residence dating from 1600. Its square layout encloses a large courtyard. The complex as a whole offers a different perspective on the town’s architectural history from its churches, each with its own dedication, works of art and architectural features.

The Chiesa Madre di Valledolmo is dedicated to the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary. It was built in the 17th century at the initiative of Countess Cristina Cutelli Joppolo and contains a gilded, carved wooden statue of the Immaculate Conception. Its architectural history and artwork stand side by side: the dedication identifies the church’s religious significance, while the statue is a specific feature of its interior.

The Chiesa delle Anime Sante was completed in 1654, then blessed and consecrated by the Bishop of Cefalù. It contains mausoleums for Anna Summaniata and Antonio Cutelli. Alongside its architectural history, this church is notable for two tombs associated with named individuals.

The distinctive features of the Chiesa di Maria SS. Della Purità, also known as Chiesa Nuova, are its architecture and style: it has three naves, is designed in a Romanesque-Baroque style, and was built from 1845 onwards. It contains a large crucifix from the Civiletti school. “Three-naved” describes the church’s division into three aisles; the style designation describes its design. Compared with the Chiesa delle Anime Sante, this church is notable for its structure and style, while the other is notable for its recorded history and mausoleums.

Not all cultural and historical points of interest are churches. The Bevaio “Acqua della Signora Cristina” is considered a historic and cultural landmark in Valledolmo and an example of Sicilian rural architecture. It complements the religious buildings with another distinct perspective on the town’s architecture.

Tomatoes, Festivals and Local Production

The Sagra del Pomodoro takes place from Friday to Sunday in the third week of September. Various tomato varieties are exhibited in Piazza Purità; visitors can also sample a range of dishes made with tomatoes, tomato sauce and “astrattu” concentrate. A traditional spaghetti meal brings the festival to a close. The festival thus features both tomato varieties and different preparations. If you would like to plan your trip around these dates, check the exact festival dates for the year in question.

Another event on the local festival calendar is the Sagra dell’uva, held together with the festival of DOC wines from the Contea di Sclafani. It takes place on the first Sunday in October; the Valledolmo area is part of this wine region. The two festivals have different focuses: the Sagra del Pomodoro is about tomatoes and their processing, while the Sagra dell’uva celebrates grapes and DOC wines.

A visit to Cooperativa Rinascita is another way to explore tomatoes from a production perspective. The entire production chain is presented, from cultivation to the making of preserves; the visit also includes a tasting of the cooperative’s products. As dates may vary, it is best to check whether a visit is possible before your trip.

The Valley and Local Landmarks

Valledolmo lies in a valley that stretches from Pizzo Sampieri and Monte Campanaro to the mountain of Cammarata. These three named elevations give the description of the landscape a specific frame of reference and complement the town’s history with a perspective on its surroundings.
