San Giuseppe Jato lies at the foot of Monte Jato, which rises to 852 metres. This destination combines an ancient city and historic sites with religious festivals and a landscape shaped by agriculture. You can therefore focus your stay on different interests: archaeology, the traditions surrounding the Madonna della Provvidenza, or the wine and agricultural culture of the Jato Valley.

Landscape and ancient city

The Jato Valley is characterised by broad, gently rolling clay plains, intensively used for arable farming and viticulture. This land use gives the surroundings a rural character, offering a contrast to the archaeological remains on Monte Jato. If you are interested in history, a footpath from the visitor centre of the Monte Jato archaeological site leads to the ancient city of Iaitas in about 40 minutes. It is also known as Ietas, Giato and Jato.

One of the ancient city's most striking structures is its theatre: it was 68 metres wide overall and had 35 rows of seats for around 4,400 spectators. Its dimensions and capacity give a concrete sense of its scale. This makes the walk to the ancient city a way to explore a clearly defined historical destination, without assuming a specific amount of time for a visit.

Madonna della Provvidenza and festival dates

The annual pilgrimage to the Madonna della Provvidenza takes place on 21 July. During the procession, the painting is carried each year to the sanctuary at the former Feudo Dammusi and then returned to the church. It is kept there until the following year. The original painting was found at Feudo Dammusi on 21 July 1784. The multi-day patronal festival cycle also includes a horse parade on 13 August and a cattle fair on 15 August.

If you would like to plan your trip around a particular date, note the difference between them: the pilgrimage takes place in July, while the horse parade and cattle fair are part of the August festival cycle. The tradition's connection with Feudo Dammusi is also reflected in the annual procession, during which the painting is taken to the sanctuary there and later returned to the church.

Other cultural heritage sites

Masseria Dammusi includes a Jesuit country estate that Prince Giuseppe Beccadelli converted into his summer residence. The estate is also known as Casa del Principe. Grotta Mirabella offers a different kind of historical evidence: its only cave, about 25 metres long, contains rock paintings depicting animals and women, which are thought to date from the Neolithic period. This dating is tentative; the cave combines its modest size with images reaching far back into the past.

In the Contrada Giambascio district, the Giardino della Memoria commemorates Giuseppe Di Matteo. It is located at the site where Di Matteo was murdered in 1996. For several years, educational and cultural initiatives promoting legality and anti-mafia work took place there. Local associations, school classes, tourists and other visitors took part. The Giardino della Memoria is open by appointment by phone at 0917718793. As arrangements may change, confirm your visit by phone in advance.

Wine, tours and getting there

Wine-growing and local production can also shape your stay. A tourist tour takes visitors to wineries and other production sites every year on 2 April. Check the current arrangements for visits before you travel. The annual Festa di Primavera features wine and product tastings, market exhibitions and folk performances. Check the festival's current programme as part of your planning.
